In Beijing, the smog is hazardous. ITV's Angus Walker reports.
BEIJING — Air quality in Beijing was the "worst on record" on Saturday and Sunday, according to environmentalists, with pollution 30-45 times above the recommended safety levels.
With a thick smog wrapping the Chinese capital since Friday, the city's pollution monitoring center warned the city's 20 million residents to stay indoors.
Data posted on Sunday by the monitoring center showed particulate matter measuring less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter (PM2.5) had reached more than 600 micrograms per square metre at some monitoring stations in Beijing, and was as high as 900 on Saturday evening.
The recommended daily level for PM2.5 is 20, according to the World Health Organisation. Such pollution has been identified as a major cause of asthma and respiratory diseases.
"This is really the worst on record not only from the official data but also from the monitoring data from the U.S. embassy — some areas in (neighboring) Hebei province are even worst than Beijing," said Zhou Rong, climate and energy campaigner at Greenpeace.
The Beijing Municipal Environmental Monitoring Center said heavy pollution had been trapped by an area of low pressure, making it harder to disperse, and the conditions were likely to last another two days.
Related: Beijing's pollution could cut 5 years off life span
Pollution has been identified as one of the biggest challenges facing China's leaders, with outgoing president Hu Jintao saying during his address to the Communist Party Congress last November that the country needed to "reverse the trend of ecological deterioration and build a beautiful China."
China said at the end of last year that it would begin releasing hourly pollution data for its biggest cities.
Beijing has already committed to a timetable to improve air quality in the city, and has relocated most of its heavy industry, but surrounding regions have not made the same commitments, said Zhou.
"For Beijing, cleaning up will take a whole generation but other regions don't even have any targets to cut coal burning. I bet the pollution here is mainly from those surrounding regions."

They blotted out the sun.
Darkness at high noon.
Too many people on this planet.
People can coexist with the environment. It isn't the number of people that threaten the environment, it's how we choose to use/abuse it. Simply blaming pollution on population size is oversimplifying the problem.
We need to reduce our air and water pollution - which means burning less fossil fuels. We need to recycle our garbage and waste. We need to change our agricultural practices - and likely part of our diet. We need to change the way we build our structures (homes, offices, etc) and how we plan our cities. In short, we need to evolve to our new reality.
We can still live a very modern, high-tech lifestyle - replete with all the comforts that we have today - without soiling our own bed. Having a clean environment and a strong economy (with lots of people) is possible. But we the people have to demand it. Demand it from our elected officials, demand it from the products we buy, demand it from the businesses we frequent.
We're all part of the problem. And we're all part of the solution. You decide what kind of future you want to leave to your children and grandchildren.
Needaplan -
Much of what you say makes perfect sense. Much of what you say was the "hot topic" in the early 1970s. Some of what was proposed then came to pass. Much of what was very important and put before the people and government was, sadly, quietly ignored. Business as usual was an easier task.
So, here we are again, 40 years on, nodding our heads and saying, "how true!" And, again, it will be lets get back to the business at hand. Don't mean to be a Debbie Downer, but to propose large, grand plans and solutions requires and even larger will to do so. It seems, these days, it takes catastrophic man-made or natural disasters to shake the status quo into action. At least for a week or two!
I don't care! Hurry up and make my new IPHONE and I want it cheap!
"Beijing has already committed to a timetable to improve air quality in the city, and has relocated most of its heavy industry." Really? Relocating is their answer???
This sounds like a Chinese lothario not willing to make the commitment of environmental marriage.
Humans are a virus on the face of the earth, and the chinese variety are especially toxic.
So, they paid no attention what has been going on in the U.S., particularly in LA? With billions in one area it never occurred to them that the fruit of their success would bite them in the ass?
They wanted to be like us now look at them, if they would of only kept riding their bikes to work they would have showed us up..Cities like Denver when the air gets trapped can be awful to be in..Maybe they will be the first to come up with some sort of vacuum duct system thru out the city that would filter the air..Instead they are either dropping like flies with all sorts of cancers or they're becoming immune to it.
Do us a favor then and exit asap, help the rest of us out a little!
This is why their economy won't take over. They're writing checks their environment can't sustain... and we're enabling them.
This is the way the state of Texas will look soon with Perry and the republicans rewarding the big and small businesses with fewer environmental regulations. I haven't found one lake in that state fit to swim in and that was years ago. I'm told it has only gotten worse!
Too many people on this planet.
===========================
.....NO, too many stupid people on this planet.
I did some active duty at Norton Air Force Base (now shut down) in San Bernadino in the 60s. There was a mountain range were west of the base. I remember looking straight West at the mountains, then as I began looking toward the South, the mountains just disappeared, there was a wall of yellowish/brown smog coming up from L.A., the effect was gradual, the view of the mountains just literally stopped, when I see pictures of the dust storms we've had recently, it reminds me of that, except it wasn't nature, it was dirty air.
If only we could get rid of the EPA and let industry work its magic, we could be more like China.
Oh, and Mark-423819: Spot on. I've been saying that for years.
Regulations, we don't need no stinkin' regulations . . .
oops, it is going to post twice, sorry.
I lost my edit before I could finish, it should have said "the effect WASN'T gradual".
Well, maybe the Chinese will kill themselves off before they can conquer us.
And the pollution just stays there does not get in the jet stream what a stupid self destructing world keep giving the 1% all your cash you sheep
You're right about too many people on the planet, it's the root cause of just about every problem we are facing today, global warming being the worst one. Paul Erlich wrote a book about it in the 70's - The Population Bomb - and was largely accepted, but then was quickly forgotten. Our government rewards people with tax exemptions for having more kids. Think about it. The resources are finite - clean air, clean water, oil (which they haven't come close to finding a replacement for, and is necessary for every facet of our civilization today). @Needaplan: I have one question for your ideas about supporting billions of people on this planet, and that is why? Why not address the root problem instead of trying to find ways to support more and more people? More people = less resources = more war. Does it all come out in the wash?
I gots me an O'bama phone!!! yeeaahhhh baby!
Clean energy is never really clean. Population is the problem. Not oil. Not coal. These are just side effects of maintaining 7 billion people.
Mark, our government is writing checks that we can't sustain. Obama's theory is to spend us out of trouble.
Who knew Romney and the likes of Kornfed are killing off the Chinese by sending all our factory jobs to China and helping to cause the pollution.....? That will be the republicans next election excuse for sending American jobs to China....with no pollution regulations in China we are killing off our next enemies by sending American jobs to them......putting profits in offshore accounts to avoid paying taxes is the price we pay to destroy America's competition...how clever...!...
The "National Geographic" wrote this about China, "No other country is investing so heavily in green energy. But no other country burns as much coal to fuel it's economy." The Chinese are working on it. They will probably be the ones to take most advantage of any technological advances in green energy.
tompca
"Humans are a virus on the face of the earth, and the chinese variety are especially toxic."
QWe enable them by purchasing products from them. IF we as Amercians insisted all imports were produced by the same standards we demand here some major changes would take place. First and foremost the environment would benifit. We only have so much clean air and fresh water. When we mess those up we all are done. Secondly American workers would become more equal i the world labor force which would mean more jobs on American soil. Although many oppose unions , union workers know all too well that to keep jobs in America we must first buy American made products. We all have chosen to purchase based more on price than quality or place of manufacture.
Starsailing.... the election is over and you should make an attempt at getting over Ronmey. In case you don't know there has been many many thousands of people who have invested in the China growth over the last 20 or 30 years and Mitt Romney is just one person. In fact is you were to check it out you may even find that your great President actually has a few dollars invested there himself..
Beijing in the morning now is what New York, London and Tokyo looked like 40 years ago.
Yes, it's true our sources or finite, although I believe clean water and air should be infinite as long as conditions here on earth support having water and an atmosphere. Why as a civilization are we not thinking about the future? 50 years from now, 100 years from now, a thousand years from now? Of course the reasons are always monetary. At best, we have enough oil to last 200 years. That doesn't seem very long at all. Let the next generation figure it out. Isn't that always the answer or flat-out denial?
Scientist think algae can be a clean source of energy for us. It's relatively easy to grow, requires very little nutrition, provides a lot of energy and is clean. It can be used to replace oil as an energy source. I think machines would have to be modified to use it. Maybe we can give the oil companies the first opportunity to develop it on a large scale; that way they would be more willing to comply. I saw this information on the Discovery Channel: "World without Oil".
When I was growing up in LA and Orange County in the 50s and 60s...our smog was so bad, you couldn't take a breath without coughing. It was horrible back then. Hope the Chinese can make some progress with cleaning up their air.
When the EPA said clean up or get out, most got out and went to China and other Asian countries. Along with the jobs went the industrial Smog. Companies do not care about the environment or people, just the bottom line. Corporations are NOT people because they do not have to breath the AIR.
Well this is clearly a liberal conspiracy to maybe promote clean energy...right?
Just think, if only "clean coal" has it's way YOUR city will have the pleasure of the same beautiful air Chinese are dealing with. Clean coal and it's supporters have no desire to live in your child's future, they have the best of everything right now. Clean coal has no desire to clean up their mess because they created a few jobs. They live in the best places on earth, they eat the best of what can be produced because they have the money, WE HAVE THEIR POLLUTION, WE HAVE TO DRINK THEIR CHEMICAL LACED WATER, WE HAVE TO BREATH THE DIRTY AIR THEIR SMOKE STACKS BELCH OUT CONTINUALLY. We pay for their high life. WE NEED TO CHANGE THAT!!!!!!
I put Solar on my roof and put LED lamps in my home to combat high PG&E utility rates. In doing so, I also lowered my carbon footprint. Economics can work with environmental issues and we can all win.
This proves a number of things. First, we are not the problem, China and other third world nations are. It is stupid to bankrupt this country when whatever we do will be swamped by the third world.
Second, it is indeed the EPA that is shipping jobs overseas and while that has lowered OUR pollution it has dramatically increased WORLD pollution. I thought environmentalists were supposed to think globally before acting locally, looks like they failed.
Third, it is pathetic to blame Romney, or republicans for this as Obama has been very supportive of other nations pollution. He funneled $2 billion through the world bank to fund Brazil's off shore oil and even promised to be an eager customer. Biden also bragged about a huge wind turbine purchase deal from China. While he could have supported the Keystone pipeline Obama instead fumbled, making it more likely China will get the crude and run it through their highly polluting refineries.
work harder china boy...enjoy your air...wall-mart will sell it ...buy china boy...a hoodie...
It does no good for the US to implement "green" policies, when China or India do not.
We humans LIVE ON ONE PLANET, SHARE ONE ENVIRONMENT. ONE ECO SYSTEM.
Message Ends
Avenger...Elections are over huh?....Sure...whenever republicans denounce their pledges to King Norquist and renounce their pledges to vote and obstruct every bill that would help America.....
When I was a kid, I remember reading that in Tokyo people have to wear masks because of pollution. I think it is a problem with environmental laws not catching-up with a country's appetite to expand its industries. We as humans don't usually believe in this environmental crap until we experience it first hand.
I think your right. But we had all better wake up soon. When I was in Tokyo, Japan in '73 I was amazed at how clean the environment was. The Japanese had equipped most of the taxis with propane and many of the small to medium size trucks were also modified for propane. The downside was the tank took up part of the trunk but propane burns cleaner, is more efficient. The Japanese recognized early on the need to make changes and did so. They seem to be a people that recognize early on what is wrong in their environment and then make changes for the better. Eventually China will be forced to make changes to protect their environment too. Unfortunately it will have to get worse. We were the same. It took government intervention for force energy producers to filter their stacks and the auto business to produce cleaner cars. There is still more we can do but ....
Big change coming soon, when we run out of the black goo! People with money won't let go of their hold on the people.
But... but, humans can't change the atmosphere. This is clearly a natural event.
Too many vehicles and too many people.
PM2.5 is a new concept in China, many cities face the similar situation now.
Hey who cares about the environment or the world its all about the new GOD cash now
Rich people aren't the problem.
Using energy resources isn't the problem.
Maintaining a population of 7 billion is the problem.
People living in shacks and having 8-10 kids is the problem.
yes lol just what i mean no comman sence what is coming u deserve
stop the blaming of who, NO big deal something can be done quite easily. No, it's NOT the political parties or science, nor EPA. it's the imagination & creativity people are Not using for a remedy. the remedy is so simple, I cannot believe people have Not applied their resources effectively.......
To M C GUSTO...If those shacks, with 8-10 kids are Cristian Republican middle American Family's, Does that count too? If you put 5000 watts of solar panels on the house so they do not have to burn Dung or Coal, would that not clean up the air for the rest of us? We can cleanup our own backyard and lead the world in clean energy, or, we can just complain.
The picture is the US without the EPA, a republican dream.
Guess who established the EPA ... Richard Nixon, a Republican.
Start to think and stop living in a world of platitudes!
Yes, but which party's candidates include eliminating the EPA as part of their platform on a regular basis? Hint: It's not the Democrats...
I think Jose's head just exploded.
Jose V. --- Oh yeah! --Richard Nixon! Now there was a winner. sheesh, are you kidding me?
This isn't about R's vs D's, boys and girls. Blaming one side or the other is a fools game. The majority of politicians elected by us are (both sides) neck deep in the money grab and will do anything (meaning nothing) to keep it going. Don't delude yourselves. The politicians will promise you anything knowing they are part of the problem with their personal investments; and worse yet: in control of the outcomes. And, the public (in general) does not care.
Nice fail there Joe.
ah yes, republicanbs....you do your fellow libbers an injustice when you jump at the chance to say something derogatory about the other half of the citizens of the USA on a topic you are so obviously such an expert on...come back when you have something intelligent to offer.
This is the way Texas will look after Perry and the republicans in the state negate all the environmental protection in favor of big and small business profits. There isn't one fit lake I've been to in that state that is fit to swim in right now!
You political trash talking clowns never quit, everything and I mean EVERYTHING you idiots blame on the other party. You fit right in at MSNBC they should hire you all as reporters.
LynrdSky,
No go to FOX and see who they always blame with their LOL "Fair and Balanced"propaganda. I looked at O'reilly and he's going on 15 straight shows blaming nobody on the right!
Its like being stuck in a Bong..
Jose: Celebrating Republican Nixon for signing off on the EPA isn't going to get you far when much of today's conservative/odd-ball libertarian movement is about killing or at least gutting it.
Pelosi, Reid, Nepolitano, Holder, Obama, Biden, Feinstein....most corrupt politicians ever in gov't and are destroying this country. Support of people like these is sickening. They have a horrible agenda and policy on everything. The liberal corruption is at an epic alarming level. Liberals also pushed for war in Iraq if you didn't know...that wasn't all Bush. It was Mrs. Clinton, Kerry, Reid, and others, too. Issue #1: budget and spending is totally ignored by these people and being replaced by an assault weapons ban?? Outrageous. They will spend to oblivion and beyond, and they're taking you along for the ride. They do not care about you.
"Liberals also pushed for war in Iraq if you didn't know...that wasn't all Bush."
Try selling that garbage to someone who didn't spend a good chunk of 2002-2003 in the streets demonstrating against that war. The fact that Bush, Cheney and the pro-war press were able to drum-beat some Democratic politicians into going along with it does not make it any less Bush's war. I remember being attacked as unpatriotic by conservative colleagues who were mad at "liberal pussies" for standing in the way of their war. Now, that the war has been revealed for the hubristic folly that it was, conservatives just love to pretend that it was some big bipartisan mistake, and of course putting the war off the books didn't worry them about deficit spending at the time.
Astro21 ... you are right - mostly. There are many Republicans like me who ARE environmentalists and much more in tune to the Northeastern Republicans of old that emphasized the efficiency of society relying on faith in the individual and community, then on enslaved dependence on an indebted government. Nixon, on domestic policies, despite his enduring 'evil' image was quite liberal. He not only established the EPA, under no pressure from anyone but essentially after witnessing the pollution of the Ohio river, but he established many government assistance programs such as the Earned Income Tax Credit for low-income individuals/families (I myself have misgivings about this). Essentially, we do not live in a cartoon world to be stigmatizing people just based on their political affiliation.
Jose V. Agreed. Despite the heated rhetoric on these boards, I do try to remember that people who do not share my political sentiments are nonetheless my neighbors and friends. Have a nice day.
"This is the way Texas will look after Perry and the republicans in the state negate all the environmental protection in favor of big and small business profits."
Typical libtard comment. TX rivals CA in green energy and is building out a thousand mile hyrdogen infrastructure. TX is the #2 provider of wind energy and has extensive solar installations.
Chicago had rivers that caught fire and Canada/USA had 'acid rain' killing millions of trees, during the early 1960s...
This resulted in the US awakening to Industrial Pollution and its environmental effects...
What followed was the US Steel industry modernization and many other 'Rust Belt' industries fleeing the USA for more friendly countries. They also took with them - many high paying jobs, resulting in a regional economic decline, that still exist...
China has make the choice between the environment or economic advances:
1. Currently environmental cancers are the leading cause of death in China. Replacing AIDS & TB...
2. China has taken measures to restrict population movements into their polluted/over built cities...
3. China has unionized the Companies that have businesses in China, driving up wages & benefits. This has resulted in their business owners to relocate to Vietnam, Thailand, etc...
4. China is closing an old coal power plant every month and replacing it with more efficient/clean facilities. They are also building the largest solar power facility in the World...
5. China is moving their dirty processing/mining industries to other countries.
a. Oil - from Canada, Venezuela, Brazil, etc...
b. Coal - from Australia, USA, etc...
c. Rare earths - from Tibet, Africa, Canada, etc...
The person/Country that stands between them and these resources, will pay a price. Look at what is happening in the South China Sea and along much of China's border regions...
That's nice and I'm really glad to hear that but it's too little too late. That horse has left the stable.
It was the "mighty" Cayahoga River that caught fire. Wrong river, wrong city, wrong state, wrong lake. Famous enough that Randy Newman wrote a song about it. Check it out, since you didn't check anything else out before you wrote.
Randy Newman's "Burn On" was about the Cuyahoga River, not the "Cayahoga" River. Check your spelling before beating up on people for their mistakes.
They should do the same for L.A. and then throw away the key!
Life expectancy in Asian is now far lower than that in the USA. Our funding problems on Social Security and Medicare is because we in America are living linger while other countries now breath pollutants we used to have. We exported our Jobs and pollution to gain longer lives and profits from low wages. The poor have always done the "Dirty Work" and now the world's poor are in Asian Countries. But soon, the dirty industries will move to an even poorer African Countries and the pollution will spread. Dirty, life shortening jobs used to be compensated with "Blood Money". Young poor men and Women would fill the dirty jobs because the money was better than clean agricultural jobs. As we became more educated, we chose not to do those kinds of life shortening jobs and others have filled them over seas. We, the West, have exported that smog to China.
The difference is we could have had reasonable pollution controls and kept those industries, China's industries are far more polluting. We did not decrease world pollution by sending factories to China, we increased it and lost millions of jobs to boot.
China is upgrading their power plants but they are still firing up two new coal plants a week and MSDNC recently reported they are opening up 500 new coal mines to feed them.
roninxian,
"It has been 40 years since the Buffalo, Cuyahoga and Rouge Rivers caught fire, and over 100 years for the Chicago River." You usually reference the first occurrence, not the ones that followed... read -
Burning Rivers
by John H. Hartig
Publication date: June 2010
You need to read a book instead of relying on trash music...
Chicago also reversed the flow of a river, so they could pump their sewage into the head-waters of the Mississippi....
But you would probably not know this, due to the lack of songs covering it... Ha! Ha!
BTY - Some of use have lived in Asia for YEARS and follow the developments in China, their military build-up and the enslavement of the other Asian Countries people...
Couldn't have happened to a better bunch of pricks.
Just hope those so called pricks don't come over and take over your country...oops, they already have. Sorry...
AC-Robertson. you are correct. They are secretly cleaning the earth of its resources and anyone who is willing to let them buy it. They are big in Africa also. I wouldn't worry to much though, they will kill the 1 billion living there with their own waste and pollution. If this is progress, who the hell wants this?
They also have a huge garbage problem they didn't have before this capitalism started. They are dumping it outside of cities and anywhere they can find. This is what happens when you don't "PLAN" things before yous start to industrialize. The only good thing is that China is communist and if they want to change something over there, they usually can and will. You can't escape your pollution forever. You can move to other less restricted countries and pollute their water, land, and air, but eventually you are going to run out of places on this planet and then it will be too late.
"Smog chokes Beijing". I look forward towards reading "Smog CHOKED Beijing".
Pollution, from Asian, is arriving at the Oregon coast daily. Enjoy the one and only atmosphere the planet has.
The EPA needs to be reined in so it works WITH industry not against it. We are not doing ourselves or the world any favors by exporting our heavy industry to countries with no controls.
If, as many believe, that takes completely scrapping the current EPA and starting over, so be it.
...and maybe, hopefully beijing will spontaneously combust from all this.
Then who would make all the stuff we buy? Will we have to start making it and suffocate in the smog also?
Way to go Humans!!! That's what happens when you take a crap in the swimming pool. Keep shipping that cheap plastic sh*t to Hobby Lobby and Wal-Mart. The ocean isn't quite full yet.
If you will look at that computer you have on right now, I'm 99.9% sure it was not made in the USA. Hobby Lobby and Wal-Mart sell that cheap plastic just like all the other stores in the USA does. Nobody in the USA makes it anymore all the USA makes now is porn & rap music.
But the best darn porn in the world.
Another failed leftist propaganda attempt, Apple, Dell, etc. are all made in China. Costco, Home Depot, Lowes, etc. all sell the same stuff Wal-Mart does, all from China.
heavy pollution had been trapped by an area of low pressure, making it harder to disperse, and the conditions were likely to last another two days.
Disperse where?
To the Oregon coast.
And Washington coast. Luckily we have the rain forest to the west of us to clean the air out Seattle way.
BTW, how's that illegal exotic animal trade going? While you're busy wiping out the human population maybe you can sell some of that ivory and Rhino tusk to bail yourself out when all the debt you purchased from the U.S. turns out to be nothing but worthless paper.
There are basically two things which happen to the human immune system when pollution gets this high. (It's called "fight or flight". Either your immune system ramps up and you evemtually develop an autoimmune reaction (fight) where your immune system starts attacking your entire body, or your immune system ramps down and you develop cancer (flight). Either way there is very little your immune system can do to battle this kind of attack (other than coughing, which only pulls more pollution in), and over time this kind of attack eventually disables or kills a great many people. - RC
(If you don't get cancer and die (the lucky ones?), later on in life there is a significant possibility that you will develop COPD, or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, which means you will probably have to walk around hooked up to an oxygen tank the rest of your life (and even then you won't be able to do much), or else you will slowly suffocate to death in a truly agonizing way.) - RC
PS - I am expecting natural oxygen levels in the atmosphere to eventually begin to drop significantly due to global warming killing off the phytoplankton in the oceans and the forests on the land, so much of the world's population could eventually be walking around hooked up to oxygen tanks with the added problem of COPD.
(There has already been a 40% drop in plankton levels in the oceans just since the 1950s, mostly due to global warming.) - RC
Invest in Oxygen equipment and Ocean Water electrolysis. Sea levels are rising, meaning, we have EXTRA salt water to havest. Why not put it to use to issue oxygen masks to everyone and make them pay for the Air they breath. The ultimate Capitalist Product.
Ever see Spaceballs? "Perriair" in a can! :<)
It'll be a long time before it gets better. Was in Hong Kong last month (Dec.2012) for 8 days and I realized while I was there I didn't see the sun more then 2 of the days. Such a great city is about to be ruined by the mainland government actions.
Jakarta, Indonesia is the same way.
What goes around comes around....as you sow so shall you reep
It's a Chinese problem, and they can choose to solve it, or not. If they all die from pollution, then who will make my contaminated pet food, counterfeit pharmaceuticals, or cheap plastic crap that Walmart sells? Hello, Africa.
India has been more then willing to make the counterfeit pharmaceuticals.
India will be the next country to surpass us in carbon output. According to MSDNC reports China and India will account for 70% of new coal plants built this year.
Obviously China is repeating the same mistakes that other industrial nations have made, albeit on a grander scale. Expressing hatred for the Chinese is foolish, however. Many of those commenting here seem to delight in demonizing the Chinese, who are also mothers, fathers, sons and daughters. Disregard for a moment the defects of both American and Chinese governments and reflect on the human suffering. By the way, it's spelled 'reap', Jeff.
Good comment Mark. Well said. Have a good day Sir.
I'll third that. They only want the same things we have, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
The problem is the only way to get there fast is the same way we got there, cheap fossil fuels. While it's prudent to say don't take the same route we did, it's the height of arrogance to demand they don't. Like it or not renewable energy will not get them there any time soon.
20 million people in one spot .. OMG what else can you expect...
That is the population of Bangkok, Thailand. Higher if you count the daily commuters, from the surrounding areas...
But their pro-active 'Energy Policy' resulted in the World Health Organization calling Bangkok a "model city" for it's efforts to reduce polution.;
1. Conversion to NG for their mass transit systems, taxis, buses, trains, even tuk tuks, for almost a decade now...
2. Selling NG @ 25% below cost for cooking, this also lowered the electricity usage, cutting of trees and disposal problems...
3. They just phased out 100% crude derived vehicle gas now selling only ethanol mix gas and straight diesel is next. Electric vehicles now pay, NO Taxes...
4. Their sub-ways, elevated trains/roads and soon 'High Speed' trains will help resolve their traffic congestion, according to the EXPERTS by 2020. But until then, the construction and high numbers of personel vehicles/motor bikes, make driving an ADVENTURE... Ha! Ha!
BKK still has a smog problem in certain areas, but their levels are DECREASING...
The technology exists right now for urban electric vehicles, which BTW don't use any significant energy when they are stuck in traffic jams. - RC
But they are expensive even for our population. China is not a money pit any more than we are.
China manufactured a cheap lead-acid battery vehicle. It was targeted for their city dewelers, but the farmers were buying the highest numbers....
The problem is the farmers have limited electrical power available, requiring China to build more COAL power facilities...
Then there is the little problem with the short service life of the batteries and their manucacture/recycle processes on the environment...
The study, "Comparative Environmental Life Cycle Assessment of Conventional and Electric Vehicles," appears in the Journal of Industrial Ecology. Researchers from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology declared in the study that "EVs exhibit the potential for significant increases in human toxicity, freshwater eco-toxicity, freshwater eutrophication, and metal depletion impacts, largely emanating from the vehicle supply chain."
The end result was MORE Environmental damage and HIGHER TOTAL Pollution rates...
This is just one example of what is going on in China....it's noteworthy because it is the capital city. If there was one city that the chicoms would want to be as pollution free as possible and that could be managed by the party apparatchiks....to show case to the world, it would be their capital. So one can just imagine what some of the other cities along the east coast are experiencing. The country is a giant cesspool....and will eventually implode.
ceo: Have you ever been to China? I bet not...I have...it's a beautiful country...yes, the cities are crowded but very clean. The people that I have met are friendly, welcoming and cheerful. It is not a "cesspool" as you, so inappropriately have described it. Do not make judgements about something you have no knowledge of. Hopefully, the Chinese people will find further remedies for their pollution problems...they are people, just like us, afterall.
Hey Juanita.....I spent almost 15 years in the shoe business and left that business about ten years ago. I left the business for one primary reason...the travel. And guess where that travel would take me, where I would spend up to 3 weeks at a time touring and inspecting manufacturing plants, several times within a year? Take a wild guess.....so spare the lecture on what life in China is all about. I have personally witnessed open, running sewage outside of plant dormitories that housed hundreds of plant workers. I have personally witnessed what these manufacturing facilities do with their waste and garbage, which is discarded anyway they can. While you have seen the major urban hubs of China...where things are kept as clean as possible, I have been to the outer fringes of these urban areas where things are much different. You have no freakin idea what goes on......While the vast majority of Chinese people are good and decent, their quest to manage environmental issues takes a back seat to their desire to make money. So yes, I can make judgements, because I have been to this country many times and I do know what I'm talking about. Do you stick your foot in your mouth that often...or is this a special occasion?
That was old communist China, the new capitalist China has been cleaning up it's act. That's not to say everything got cleaned up overnight, but now that they are affluent enough to begin improving, they are.
The problem is, like us, the only way to attack the environment issue is to be profitable enough to afford it and that takes cheap fossil fuels.
You don't know WTF you're talking about....did you read the article? Things in Bejing and other cities are getting worse, not better. Pull your head out of your anal cavity and face reality.
Aren't we lucky that Repugnicans failed to claim the White House last November? With their never-ending quest for profits over people, we'd be seeing looser environmental regulations that would've led to similar pollution in the US. Indeed, some Repugnicans wanted to eliminate the EPA and OSHA altogether, preferring to let big industry regulate itself. We all know how well that worked in the past.
And we all know what an ignorant ass you are Al. Just fyi.....it was a Republican President that created the EPA. As far as polluting the environment...recent reports indicate that the Obama administrations Cash for Clunkers program did just that. Rather than recycle the old cars....they were shredded, producing all kinds of environmental toxins. So aren't we all lucky that idiots like you are running the country.
CEO
The CASH FOR CLUNKERS had their engines destroyed , then sent to the recyclers.
http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Politics/2009/0804/cash-for-clunkers-what-happens-to-the-old-cars
Al had it right, if the gopers had attained the White House, the regulations would be thrown out the window and businesses would regulate themselves. We ALL know what would happen if that happened. China would be mild compared to what the US environment would look like.
Why don't you sight a more relevant article, rather than one that was written back in August of 2009, the period in which the Cash for Clunkers program was launched. All this article states is what was suppose to happen....not what actually took place. Try the link below...and then do the google thing, you'll find numerous articles citing what actually happened. Assuming your mind is open enough to accept the truth....which I doubt.
http://now.msn.com/cash-for-clunkers-hurt-the-environment-more-than-it-helped-report-says
Isn't is amazing that you say it was a republican president that created the EPA, but won't admit that the republicans want to do away with the EPA and turn the US into another smog filled country with no regulations.
@starbuck
actually your wrong, you say the engines were destroyed. WRONG!!.. they were made not to be used, they will be recycled however.
you see, those engine were drained of their oil and coolant and a liquid glass was poured in, then when the engine is ran and heats up, the liquid glass hardens and locks-up the engine deeming it unusable.
however, it will be recycled as with all scrap metals in the junk yard.
the cash for clunkers program was a welfare program for the auto industry and a failure.
Starbuck; Isn't it amazing that you once again dodge the issue at hand, Cash for Clunkers, and ignore the truth. Yes, there are Republicans that want to do away with the EPA...and there are justifiable reasons to have that position. It has become a regulations nightmare, assuming powers never intended in the original legislation. With that said, it will never be completely eliminated....pared back hopefully, but not eliminated. How's that....does that work for you? I'll be waiting to read your mea culpa.
Yes, and don't forget that we "Republicans" not only want dirty air, but we also want dirty water as well as not caring at all about our children and grandchildren and oops, I don't want to forget that we hate old people too. Darn, I'm sure that I must have left out all the other things that we hate and/or want to deprive others of.
The EPA started out fighting pollution. Like most bureaucracies it took on a life of it's own. In a typical Washington power grab they went from solving problems to declaring outright war against industry.
All bureaucracies have to justify their existance, the EPA does it by writting regulation after regulation without regard for their impact. If they worked with industry they could get 99% of what they wanted but when 100% will bankrupt the country, the EPA still thinks it's justified.
Liberal liars will say republicans want no controls or regulations, that is of course absurd. What we want is reasonableness, something that has gone out the window. Now that this fascist all powerful attitude has been ingrained in the EPA, I am siding with those who want to scrap the whole thing and start over.
All developing nations will be cycled though this, fueled by manufacturing outsourcing, by violations of intellectual property for the sake of greed, the the power of the aristocratic dictators, by the might of the Chinese enslavement of millions. So many problems to solve, and a Congressional House controlled by 2% weilding over 60% of the wealth. The question is, is a 2014 T'Rexublican extinction from the House to little to late. Will the present Neogene Period end with a Borgzoic Period terminus of humanity's civilization. Would be a great movie...;-)
Another hypocritical libtard comment. How about Reid, Pelosi, Gore, Kerry, Clinton, Obama, all 2%ers. Do they count? Remember Pelosi and others insider trading on the very industries they were regulating?
Who the hell do you think runs the senate, paupers? Go sell your fascist propaganda somewhere else.
I lived in Shanghai in the mid '80's. Even then the pollution was appalling. Can't imagine what it is like now.
yes and it takes 3-4 days and that microscopic pollution is drifted into the usa.
enjoy your flatscreen, and i-phone suckers.
thank you Nixon you piece of dung
Nixon did the world a huge favor, isolationist China would most assuredly have turned into a belligerent world power ala N. Korea had they not engaged with the west. There are still a few hard liners around but the capitalists are winning the day. That is a good thing for world peace.
He also initiated the EPA.
And yes, you are a village idiot. :<)
they use a picture with FOG to push their pollution crap.
A progressive magic trick !!
You must think the EARTH is still flat too.
your funny,
as you still drive around in you gas guzzler and fill the landfills with your trash and use the power of coal power and dry up the rivers when you shower.
and you insult me.
stop being a hypocrite.
That is FOG in the picture? How can you tell? Remember when the Olympics were there, China shut down the factories in the immediate area and the air was clear, where did the fog go? Oh, that's right, it was smog, not fog.
I drive a Lincoln Town car, burn natural gas for heat in the winter and have solar hot water.
BTW, it's you're funny, NOT your funny.
how do you know its smog?..oh because they say it is.
hows the solar hot water power up your computer!!...try again.
remember several years ago environmental scientist had said in their emails of fudging their numbers on their findings and now you expect everyone to believe what they say now about this photo.
get real!!
My electric power comes from Oswego Nuclear power plant, pollution free. I lived in LA in the 70's and experienced smog first hand. The Olympics had clear air because China shut down their factories. After they restarted the plants after the olympics, it's back.
hows the solar hot water
It's how's, not hows
Learn to spell the English language, it makes your rants a little more credible. That environmental scientist you quote, is that one of them that doesn't believe the Earth is warming?
I'm going to take my Russian Grandfathers advice now.
Do not have a battle of the brains with an unarmed person, they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.
wow, nuclear..really dude, what will ever happen to the fuel rods when that plant is too old to function properly.
talk about being a hypocrite, why dont you tell everyone about spent fuel rods and what they do with them.
Don't talk about nuclear when you don't understand anything about it. I do like how you used 'fuel rods' from some other text somewhere to make it sounds like you know what your talking about.
I KNOW exactly what is done with spent fuel rods here in the US. I work at a nuclear plant. I'd be willing to bet you have no idea what the dangers are with a spent fuel rod, how or where they are stored, or anything really...
Another idiot American that gets his nuclear knowledge from faux news, Mad Max, and The Toxic Avenger.
Lets face it, Green energy is not going to be totally successful, because people want power all the time not just when the sun is up or the wind blows. Not to mention pay the higher bills for less service they give. Even today the best solar cell are less than 20% effecent. I lived in LA for more then 35 years. It shows that a city can improve air quality and still run. Cars here get better fuel mileage, and polute less. China just needs to be more fuel effecent, and burn cleaner coal.
Againstthegrains, I think you're just being antagonistic. Regardless of whether the picture is smog or fog doesn't change the facts. IF you read the article, you would find out that they have devices that measure the pollution content and it's 30-45 times above what is considered safe.
Isn't it a safe bet that if you don't have a lot of regulations and many industries that the results would be environmental damage? Also, I think most people can see the difference between smog and fog (not a reference to the picture); not to mention the smell/taste.
Hydro electric is renewable and can run 24/7. Rain runoff fills reservoirs and that water is used to run dynamos. What of you took wind and solar and pumped water up behind those reservoir dams during the day and harvested the power at night?
Solar is the cheapest form of energy around even without federal subsidies if you DIY the install. Thanks to China making them a commodity, prices have fallen precipitously. I have 10KW myself. Payback should be about five years, then all electricity is free. No other power source green or otherwise can come close to that.
If you are conservative like me and want some of your money back from the feds and states this is an easy way to do it. Can't beat those green tax cuts for the rich!
Owning the technology to allow you to post on here means without a doubt you have contributed to that smog cloud. Being smug about smog and righteous against your political foes because of this problem is the most hypocritical piece of filth you can possibly conjure and not understand. If you don't have to see the filth and you support fancy laws, regulations and taxes that move the manufacturing to where you can't see it anymore, you believe you have done well. You will never regulate China. India is equally bad. The best thing you can do is use your superior brain power you try to flaunt and flame everyone with to figure out how to get manufacturing back here and keep it clean at the same time. I'm sure every democrat on here knows exactly how to do that. It's just those darn other people buying iPhones and iPads who stop you.
