Outrage after video shows China teacher abusing kindergarteners

BEIJING – Parents across China this week were shocked when two separate stories of gross physical abuse against kindergarten-aged children made national headlines.

On Tuesday, police in the city of Taiyuan, the provincial capital of Shanxi, detained a teacher at the Sky Montessori kindergarten after parents complained about alleged physical abuse there.

Closed-circuit TV video from inside the classroom -- released to the media soon after the scandal broke -- confirmed what parents had already inferred from their children's bruises and stories: that their teacher, Li Zhuqing, was slapping, kicking, hitting and verbally abusing them.

A video from a local Shanxi provincial news program (report in Chinese; footage starts around 34 seconds in) shows Li repeatedly slapping and shoving around the children over a 10 minute period. Two girls are shown being repeatedly slapped in the face while a boy is seen being slapped and then shoved into another student.

The father of one of the girls said he reported the abuse to the police after his daughter came home with a bruised eye and cheek, and explained to the news program why his daughter was singled out.

"The teacher [Li] did it because she couldn't answer 10 plus one correctly," said the father, surnamed Han. He noted that his daughter could do simple single-digit addition, but could not understand Li's explanation of how to solve higher sums.

According to Han, his daughter was slapped in the face around 70 times and kicked twice, while three other children in the class were reportedly hit 43, 10 and 27 times respectively.

"She is not a teacher. She should not be a teacher. To put it plainly, she is not a human being," said Han.

The story quickly went viral and drew hundreds of thousands of comments on China's Twitter-like service Weibo.

"How can the world have people like this? Her parents should be ashamed of having a daughter like that!" wrote one user. "Watching this video made me cry ... Children should never be treated like this," added another.

Li was detained under a 15-day "administrative detention," common when Chinese police are waiting to charge someone, Chinese state media reported. The Montessori school, which reportedly was unlicensed and therefore operating illegally, was also shut down indefinitely. Taiyuan city authorities pledged a month-long investigation of other municipal schools to ensure there were no other cases of abuse.

Boy held up by ears
But there was more outrage to come: Another school abuse scandal broke the next day after a picture taken at the Blue Peacock kindergarten in Wenling, Zhejiang province, circulated online.

The photo showed a teacher holding up a child by his ears -- the boy obviously in pain and the teacher grinning widely.

The teacher, Yan Yanhong, 20, was detained and police opened an investigation. Authorities revealed that she had been working without a license and that the school had been applying to certify her while she worked.

News of the abuse quickly spread around the Web, where it garnered more than 4 million posts and became a trending topic on Weibo by Thursday.

"This person is seriously sick!" wrote a disgusted Weibo user. "My child starts school next year, how frightening!" said another.

Teng Linhua, Vice-director of the Wenling Education Bureau, told the China Daily newspaper that "all teachers at private and public schools must have qualifications before being hired."

Teng said only 40 percent of kindergarten teachers in Wenling were properly qualified.

NBC News' Le Li and Johanna Armstrong contributed to this report.

Why do people do such dumb things? Even if they know it is on video. If they don't have the temperament needed to care for small children they need to do something else.

What a monster! I am so glad they got caught-It is so unfortunate it took a while but THANK GOD for videotapes and modern technology. I hope she is fired immediately and go to jail because the evidence is obvious. Maybe someone in jail will show them how it feels to be hit and abused. My son is now 24 but when he was in preschool and kindergarten Montessouri schools, private schools he would come home crying a lot and talk about the abuse (that his teacher was mean and would push him). When I approached the teachers and principals they always denied it and said he was making it up. When I would told the police they didn't even make a report and told me I needed proof. I pulled my son out of those schools and placed him in a big public school and he came home the happy and confident child he use to be. Those small private schools need more regulation and oversight from the school administrators to prevent tragedies such as this from happening.

The people of China are well known for their awful treatment of children. The video of little Yue Yue being run over in the street and then laying there to die while people stepped over her body or the liitle boy who rode his toy car into traffic and not one car even stopped to help him.

These teachers should be put in a Chinese prison for assault; so their fellow inmates will have a chance to demonstrate what they think of this sort of abuse. I assure, these parties end up in a prison, the inmates are shown video of what they had done to kids; and they will get their karma then and there. It's these teachers who will have the bumps and bruises after the prison population is done with them.

And I'm assuming that Chinese jails, unlike American jails have no such thing as protective custody to protect low lifes such as this? Good then... I got a feeling that Chinese prisons can be a bit tougher of a sentance then US prisons; and watching that have no sympathy for those 2. Throw them in, they deserve it, however hard core the jails there are... In this, it'll be their own karma in smacking children around in that way, which will be coming back to them...

My mother was a major bully too; just like this. She used to complain to us that teachers were lazy and they got paid too much. Then she'd suggest maybe she should become a schoolteacher.

We always begged her to do it because we figured maybe then she'd finally get caught hitting children people cared about. However, she never made good on that suggestion (I don't think she was that oblivious about her own temper issues).

BUT, does using violence against the teacher solve the underlying problem? I think not!

Chinese prisons are not like American prisons. I am sure that they will be given long prison terms during which the guards will administer the correctional punishment quite frequently. The Chinese people as a general rule are not abusive to their children and this surprises me that this type of incident happened. But then this is 2012 and in this world anything is possible except raising the dead.

It is typical of the culture were Chinese teachers even in the US are very abusive and insulting.

One of the many characteristics among Chinese professors for example is that they do not recognize a disability notice students present. Instead they assume such students are no good such that every attempt they make is automatically considered incorrect. Universities hire these professors who are not quite accustomed to the US culture of sensitivity to all matters of diversity we think it is worth considering.

          1) They have the tendency for outburst when ever corrected in class rooms and hold student who dare correct them in black list.

          2) Aside from fearing white students their desire to assist minority students and students with varied disability is a moot.

          3) They luck language skill to teach at university level.

          4) They often discuss in Chinese among other Chinese students even on educational topics which can not be over heard by other US students.

          5) They have the tendency to advance their Chinese students to various level at the expense of other students just to hold power while in fact they lack intuitive and creative thinking and solution as other US students. In five years of observations I have never seen a Chinese professor working closely with graduate minority students. They do work with white students because they know the consequence of not doing so. Even then they tend to hold some back.

Why do they do what they do? Well their assumption is that by holding back US students they can help Chinese exchange students qualify for permanent residency on the basis of their inflated educational achievement.

Oh fergawdsake! In Iowa we just had a teacher's aide dismissed who participated in the 1965 torture and murder of another girl!

This makes about as much sense os the Brits sticking their noses up at our Watergate and conveniently forgetting the "Perfumo Affair" of the early 1960's in their own government.

This does not surprise me at all. The culture in China is much different than ours. Children work hard and long in China making the goods we buy. These are sweat shops with no labor laws to protect them. When video's and other examples of they way things really are in China make the internet the Chineeze hear the anger that others around the world express. Maybe just maybe through that embarasment Things will beginn to change there.

We recently had an instance of a bus monitor who was abused by children. She received sympathy from people and lots of money. If this had happened in the USA, this kindergarten teacher would be fired AND brought up on charges. Yes, we do monitor our teachers here. I know that there was a time when we did NOT but that was a long time ago and today if there is proof of abuse, it is taken care of. In China children are made to work at a preteen age in their factories so it is clear that children are not respected in that country. Maybe that is why this teacher thought she could get away with this. To compare our country as being the same as China with all of the child abuse they have committed there, is grossly wrong. Yes, abuse can happen anywhere but China has a history of condoning child abuse and that is a matter of record.

I went to Catholic schools in the 50's and and sixties and believe me, they used to try and beat the devil out of us, even when it wasn't there! I was slapped kicked and punched. I had hair torn from my head and several bloody noses. I got off easy. I saw kids get their noses broke and heads slammed into blackboards. Not because we were rude or unruly so much as but because those nun's were just plain nuts! Back then our parents thought the word of God came from them, NOT. They just were a roiling bunch of sickies that were abused themselves and never got treatment.

My son also suffered in Public schools in the seventies but mostly with mental and verbal abuse. I set those teachers straight by going to the school board with complaints when necessary along with other parents that saw the same problem. And my niece tells it still occurs frequently even now.

America, China, whatever nation. Schools do not spend the time to actually vet teachers psychologically. Am I disgusted by the video? Yes. Will I condemn all Chinese teachers? No. There is no difference between them hiring monsters or us.

All teachers need to be tested and vetted beyond scholastic credentials. Even monsters can be brilliant in academia but totalling lacking in human kindness.

Certain people should be outlawed from being around children. This lady is one of them.

To those that think this kind of thing could only go on in China. Let me share.

My Step-Mom ( I was adopted ) was also one of them.

8 years old. My " Mom" and myself, and my brother, had just driven back to Florida after visiting my dad in San Diego ( he was in the Navy ). Somewhere in Texas my " Mom " decided to buy a bullwhip. No clue why she wanted one but she did. We were home about 2 hours and my grandma was over to welcome us home. " Mom" pulled out the bullwhip from bag and decided to give it a try. At my back.

11 stitches later, and after my grandma had pummeled her daughter for " being crazy ", I learned what I had to look forward to the rest of the time in that house. That turned out to be only till I was 14 and my gramma pulled me out.

And back then the police would usually only comment when you walked into the police station that "you probably had it coming."

You would be surprised how common child abuse is. Saddened actually, if you were to meet with half of the parents that come into my office and want me to represent them against what they are accused of doing to their kids. And over 80% of the time...it's the Moms " accused " of doing the abuse.

Never have represented one of those parents, and never will.

2 weeks ago, I was approached by a Korean woman who was accused of throwing salt into her 10 year old daughters eyes for not getting an A on her History test. And it seems that the paramedics, that the girl called, backed up the childs claims. Mom was not arrested and the girl was not removed from the home. Mom was just given a " notice to appear ".

                                WTF??????????????

She is filing a complaint against me ( she said ) with the BAR here because when I refused to take her as a client, and when she asked me if I knew of anyone that may defend her I said...

                                " Maybe Satan himself " ?

JEFF, me too...only it was my "real" mother. Horsewhips, switches, broom handles, hairbrushes..beat me until it broke and then beat me for breaking it. Starved me to see how long I could go without food, put castor beans in my dinner because she thought it was funny to watch me vomit, beat me unconscious and then made me take an over-dose of tranquilizers so if she had to take me to the emergency room she could say I was a drug addict and passed out and hit my head by myself and more.

I kept waiting for my Dad to rescue me--sometimes it was the only thing I had to cling to, but Dad never did anything...and then when I turned 18-I went in the army and rescued myself. I have a masters degree and a good career now, I can see you have done the same. You are worthy and worthwhile and I wish you the very best of happiness for now and in the future.

Thanks and the same to you! We are survivors for sure, and as God is my witness, I vowed the day that both my daughters were born that I may not know how to be a good parent but I know what to not do.

I just figured if I did the opposite of what my " Mom" did everything would work out.

                                It did.

It went viral from a tweet, even the Chinese government can't sweep that under the rug. If they want to open up their country to capitalism they will find they cannot keep the screws to the Intelligent Chinese People. Commnunism is evolving. Greed has it's drawbacks they may be finding out. Now when they start having lawsuits and that will come. Yeah, power to the people.

A lot of experts here on China. If you comprehend what you've read you would know that millions of people in China are outraged over this abuse. Child abuse is not condoned by people in China any more than it is in the U.S. Arguably it is less so.

Also, in China there are child labor laws just like in the U.S. People cherish their children. That's not to say there aren't children doing hard labor. But it is rare, it isn't tolerated and it's illegal.

That "made in China" product you purchased? It was made by an adult.

Those of you surprised that this made the news because the government supresses things that make them look bad? You can see "undesireable" news on TV and in the papers every single day. Just like in the U.S.

By the way, I know what I'm talking about. I am an American who happens to be living in China.

Not sure y'all follow the sequence of the events. China censors stuff that crosses int'l borders - like Internet access to the World Wide Web, but they haven't been able to figure out how to do it effectively within their own borders. This video went viral within China BEFORE the censors figured out it was coming, as is often the case these days. The domestic embarrassment is what prompted authorities to quickly arrest the teacher.

In any event, the teacher is in pretty serious trouble now. If she wasn't she would've been questioned and released with a citation and appearance date. The fact that she's being subject to 15 days preventive detention pre-charge means they intend to - and have the evidence to - throw the book at her.

What was she thinking? She could of easily have harmed one of those kids beyond a simple bruise, she is like twice their size.

Even though this is in Chinese, their is no question of abuse. How sad that a "human" being would abuse defenseless children.

I teach in China and corporal punishment is common, but these incidents go way beyond what's normal and accepted. The authorities will be punishing both of those individuals harshly and probably more so seeing as they forgot that there were cameras in the classroom.

Being spanked or hit on the hands or wrists with a ruler is common and currently accepted for poor performance or misbehavior, but holding a child up by the ears or a beating as severe as the one this article references is not something that has been acceptable at any school I've taught at.

I'm not sure at what age corporal punishment starts, I'm guessing fairly young.

@General, yes it is their business but one has is question the motive behind this video. People have
vented their frustration here after watching the video but it can leave lots of people questioning China’s
decision to impose penalty on the crazy actions shown. There are a lot of much more crazy things going on in China that they do not show. The video only stirs hate and anger, just read the comments here. Question everybody’s behavior, including your own. How many Saints do you know?

Mark what motive is that? I teach in China and all of my classrooms have cameras in them, videos like this get out in the US as well, remember the video from the Rodney King beating?

I hope and pray that someone like General Jaffey has a similar experience. To have the sheer stupidity to say this is China's problem is just someone being an ignorant ass. Children, no matter where they are from, deserve to go to school without fear of abuse from teachers. This is not China's business, this is disgusting and the entire world should be praying for the healing of these children. So General Jaffey...if you have kids and experience something similar, don't say a word. Its your business as you so ignorantly put it. Don't expect any sympathy. You are obviously a total jackass and maybe someday someone will slap the crap out of you for being a douche. You are a disgusting human being. God help your children if you have any. I feel sorry they are raised by an ignorant ass such as yourself.

@Frank, since you teach in China please tell us that China's government will take action against this crazy teacher so this behavior does not continue. Believe me I know all about crazy cops and the incident with King all to well. It is a darn shame that we as a society need video to understand that people act sooo crazy. With or without video the cops here in the US would and do lie their arse off to protect their job and badge. King would have not got nearly as much as he did without the video yet his body told the story, he did not beat himself. The cops lied all the way up to the point where the city paid King out but the video evidence was to strong as here with the crazy teacher teaching crazy. IMO the General's deep seeded need to believe is the driver of his ignorance, be well.

It doesn't surprise me coming from China. These are the same people that dump unwanted babies in the gutter for trash pick up or leave them in waiting rooms, due to the 1 child per family law. The Living Tree ministry picks up the babies that have birth defects (some only hairlip), and takes care of the unwanted children.

There has in the past been a quota of 2 children per family. My friend whose wife is a doctor has three. It is frowned upon but tolerated probably because they can afford three. The Chinese are now realizing that because they have not put the same value on girls as boys that there are not enough young women for the Chinese men to marry. Yes, Chinese culture is very different, however, just like most parents who love their children the man on the video whose child was bruised was outraged as are most people in China or America. Just as anywhere in the world, there are bad people who abuse children and other people. Because China has billions more people to feed and give medical care to than most countries the percentage of problems is going to be higher. This is an embarassment to China and I think this woman will be dealt with accordingly. Because China is so large and there are so many rural villages, I am sure there are many more terrible crimes that never make the news but it does not mean that the entirety of China is filled with criminals. And, just because they have 1/3 the number of prisoners as Americas does not mean the other 2/3 will not be punished if caught. Many of them get away and can easily escape due to lack of the number of law enforcement available and friends or family that help them escape justice. Documentation is needed to travel between provinces but just as in many countries, officials can be bribed. And, I am sure there are many agencies in China that help orphaned or rejected children but most of them are American or British and must work under the radar. In most cases, I doubt children are just left to die in the gutter. I think this is an exaggeration from past practices of China and other countries. There are families that cannot afford to feed and clothe their children. Who will do this? You? That is why there is a law to minimize unwanted children. Unfortunately, this law has caused parents to dispose of their children, some in terrible ways, or face the consequences.

This disturbs me, but what disturbs me more is this is far to common in almost every f-ing country including ours and we wonder why there is abuse rap and murder plaguing our world and yet it still goes on I'm only 28 and when I was in 7th grade my school was on the news for putting middle school students in a box made of wood and lock so called bad students in them one freaked out so bad literally ripped all his fingernails off trying to escape and then we wonder if the end of world is out there mankind stands for insanity because there seems to be no true way to stop this behavior I tell you what I would get revenge no matter the age no matter their connection you box me around your screwed I will be just as evil if not more if you do such things to me. I feel we shouldn't just arrest her we should torture here for how many days or years she has been doing this if there is anyway to find out. and religious schools should burn because they are tied to the devil himself I'm spiritual not religious and whoever is stupid enough to believe in god and the devil add a o means good, subtract a d means evil it is that simple your one of the two there is no in between. and the world has found a way to distract all of us with technology as well as shine light on things. I have a son and if found out his teacher was doing this to him she would lose her house her car and I would make sure of it one way or another I would turn life into hell.

What does this have to do with communism? The individuals in these incidents have been caught and will likely be punished severely. What's more you're talking about 2 individuals in a country of over 1 billion people, and with a substantial number of teachers teaching.

Apart from the racism of your comment, I'm not sure how precisely this is any worse than the various sex abuse scandals that regularly pop up in the US.

I have read about a lot of teachers in china doing this over the years. I am surprised everyone there is outraged. It used to be condoned and accepted.

I heard a Chinese-American say that in the seventies in California, she went to American public school during the day and a Chinese school at night. She said that at the Chinese school, when the lessons were over, each student had to recite what they had learned during the class. Anyone who got it wrong got whipped with a cane-like stick. Her parents knew and approved. She said (facetiously) "The Chinese have no tolerance for those who can't be educated and they believe corporal discipline is a deterrent to being dumb."
