The basic purpose of guns is as a projectile weapon, to be used against either other people or animals.

Yes, some people use guns for target shooting, or regard them as collectors items, and some people race cars, or collect them. But just as speed limits and requiring drivers to stay to the right greatly lessens the number of fatalities, so too, outlawing hand guns would greatly reduce the murder rate.

A hand gun can be carried in a concealed fashion, and easily transported to wherever a criminal is looking to commit a crime, including your home. A shotgun cannot, not without illegal modifications.

Hand guns strike me as a large part of the problem. They are not necessary for defense of the home, and if you are confronted on the street by an armed assailant, it is unlikely you'll be able to draw and shoot before he uses his weapon, not unless you name is "Dirty Harry" Callahan.

Protection: 9MM's are powerful enough, and yet pretty acurate. It's not like it's an oozie. Home protection, it does work well, I assure you.

Ease of Use: Handy & available unlike a rifle. I am of a shorter kind of gal, and I know my weapon of choice for my protection. Again, does it really matter what I choose to protect myself? It isn't like I'm riding around town looking for the miscreants of the world to shoot. Just isn't the case.

Comparing gun laws to traffic laws is ridiculous. People ONLY follow speed limits when there is a cop around or suspicion of one. That's the same as people not robbing a store because they fear the clerk is going to be armed and willing to defend them self. Requiring drivers to stay on the right side of the road is the same scenario. Why don't we drive on the left? The fear of an oncoming vehicle. If there is an oncoming car, odds are there is going to be a fatal accident. That's the same as a home intruder not robbing a house because they fear to meet an armed home-owner.

Lets see 381,000 x 15% = 57,150 times shots fired in violent crimes

57,150 x 15% = 8,573 total injuries , uh but there were over 82,252 total injuries in 2008, oh thats right, you have to work off the actual injuries to see how many incidents occur.

Most firearms stores do not stock automatic weapons, semi-automatic... yes; which are FAR different. In order to even purchase one of these "automatic weapons" you need a Class III/FFL and deep pockets to legally buy one. Unless it's your life goal to spend $15,000 + to go slaughter a few people, I doubt anyone buying a legal automatic weapon is going to use it with the intent to "go slaughter a lot of people." However, those with the intent to do just that generally know very little about what they're getting themselves into. In which case they usually buy an intimidating looking "assault-rifle" (semi-automatic rifle). what happens? The gun fails or jams on them because they're clueless of proper maintenance, care and operation of that particular rifle.

Guns make small holes (most active shooters are using FMJs that don't expand) they also require aiming, which is a fine motor skill. An axe on the other hand can be used to great effect by someone with no training at all, hacking off limbs and generally making the person attacked into a meat pie.
