As she nears death, woman who saved 30 babies from trash is hailed in China

EuroPics[CEN]

Lou Xiaoying, right, lies in the hospital with one of her daughters, center. Lou, now 88 and suffering from kidney failure, found and raised more than 30 abandoned babies from the streets of Jinhua, in eastern Zhejiang province, China, where she made a living recycling rubbish.

BEIJING – “What?! No, she is alive in the hospital,” exclaimed Zhang Jingjing through the phone lines.

Zhang was responding to concern on Weibo, China’s popular Twitter-like service, claiming that Lou Xiaoying, her adoptive mother, had died.

The worry was understandable, for Lou, 88, has been hailed a hero in China for reportedly saving more than 30 abandoned babies from trash cans and dumps over the past four decades.

Lou is suffering from kidney disease in the hospital, but, according to her daughter, she's still alive.

"My mother has gotten better,” Zhang, 33, reported. “The hospital has spared us much expense. They have also minimized the kinds of medicines that my mom has to use. Money collected from donations has helped us a lot, too."

Helping others
Lou, who was born in 1924 in Fujian Province, collected and recycled garbage to make a living. She and her husband, who died 17 years ago, had two biological children, a daughter and a son.

Over the years of scavenging, Lou found 30 children who had been abandoned, mostly as a result of China’s strict one-child policy. She and her husband adopted three daughters while the remaining children, mostly girls, were passed to other people to start new lives.

According to an article in Britain’s Daily Mail, Lou found her first abandoned child, a girl, when she was out collecting garbage in 1972.

“She was just lying amongst the junk on the street, abandoned. She would have died had we not rescued her and taken her in,” she said, according to the Daily Mail report. “I realized if we had strength enough to collect garbage, how could we not recycle something as important as human lives?”

“These children need love and care. They are all precious human lives,” she added. “I do not understand how people can leave such a vulnerable baby on the streets.”

Zhang told NBC News that "at one point, there were 12 members in the family” living in a deserted temple on the outskirts of the city of Jinhua, about 200 miles south of Shanghai. "It wasn't until 1987 when they were building a railway and wanted to remove our temple, did [authorities] find out about our family,” she added.

The family’s future was complicated by the rigid household registration system designed to control the movement of China’s 1.3 billion people. Known in Chinese as hukou, the central government classifies people as either city dwellers or rural peasants, which determines not only a citizen’s residence but also what kind of social services and schools they are eligible for.

Because they were living “off the grid,” none of Lou’s adopted children had a hukou. But Zhang said that people in the area soon heard about the family and help came along.

"There were some communal donations which helped two of us adopted ones go to school. But my oldest adopted sister, who is now 40, has never gone to school,” said Zhang.

Even in old age, Lou kept going out to collect trash several times a day. In 2007, Lou discovered a boy, Zhang Qilin, in a dumpster. She adopted the boy, who is now 7, as her grandson; his adoptive father is Lou’s biological son.

The youngster encountered the same problem of not having a hukou. But after a series of reports about Lou in the local Jinhua Daily, followed by other reports in the Chinese and international press, Zhang was granted permission to attend a public school called Jindong District Experimental School in Jinhua. In addition, his hukou registration process is now under way

‘Grandma Lou deserves her dreams to be fulfilled’
Fang Qing, the principal of the public school, spoke with NBC News about Lou’s youngest adoptee.

“I take for granted that every child in China has a right to education, no matter what his background is like,” Fang said, adding that the school would keep a special eye on Zhang Qilin.

“Grandma Lou deserves her dreams to be fulfilled. Good people should be rewarded with good,” Fang said.

Many netizens have chimed in on Weibo about Lou’s heroism.

“What would the world be like if only we have a few more people like Grandma Lou. I respect you, Grandma,” wrote one user.

Lou’s concern for others lives on in her daughter, Zhang, who agreed to be interviewed as long as no foreign donation appeal would be made through NBC.

“We are not in a very positive position financially,” she said, “but neither do we lack money now for my mother’s medical treatments. … We are very grateful, but we are doing fine now.”

Asked if she has ever thought about finding her biological parents, Zhang answered “No” resolutely. “She has always been my mother.”

What an amazing story: Both sad (that the Chinese one-child policy would lead to this), and great (that a recycler would be in a position to find, and save, so many children from certain death) at the same time. What a tremendous woman.

The problem is not China's one-child policy. It's the Chinese lack of respect for girls. We should all be limiting our family size to ensure everyone has a future on this planet, but not at the expense of one gender over the other.

Even though less than poor herself she adopted many of those children and had others adopt some also Incredible citizen of the world. Should we all be this generous with our resources however large or small they are. Heaven will be very lucky to have her amongst angels soon. Big loss for China and the world when it happens.

@mark,

making abortion legal defends those who do not wish to be held accountable. the reasoning supposedly for planned parent hood teaching safe sex isnt working, nor has it ever worked to warrant federal or state funding. due to the fact, the very people who go, mostly go to have an abortion. little late for a life lesson, one's parents should have taught them to begin with, wouldnt you say?

China is China, we live in America, home of the hand outs. killing unborn babies isnt the answer, taking mothers off welfare is. by rights you should get only 1 shot, and a limited one at being on welfare, after that, you should be on your own. same with having an abortion outside of rape, or incest. 1 shot to learn a valuable lesson. if one can not take the life of an unborn child seriously, then pay your own way.

we next to hand out condoms, and birth control on the corner for free as it is, so being the case (planned parenting), why has it far from worked? like any other waste of $ and a burden added to the taxpayer that doesnt work, should be defunded. i have yet to hear how planned parenthood has saved the day for anyone. welfare used to be a hand up, now its been a handout for the past 30 yrs or so. THIS hasnt worked either.

eventually, no matter what one thinks of the value of life, we do need to curb, and cut back on our population. if this were to happen this very day, people useing common sense knowing they will be able to care AND provide till a legal age a child, in 20-40 yrs the effect would be staggering.

imagine, those who know they cant afford a kid, dont have them. they dont get knocked up only to have an abortion, or go on welfare. responsible parenting would take over eventually, as well a huge mark for economic increases. responsible parents, raising responsible kids, seeking responisble work for their future. housing, medicare, and all the government finacial woes facing us today would become small potatos.

Neither is "right" (abortion or throwing your baby away). The children that this humanitarian adopted had a second chance at life- you never know what life will bring you. People need to think about abstinence, using protection, taking birth control pills, patches, shots, IUDS, sterilization CORRECTLY if they are not ready or willing to take care of children instead of using abortion as an option. There are so many options to prevent pregnancy (and adoption if all else fails). It makes me sick how many unborn children get killed, how many animals get killed at shelters, factory farms etc. just because they are "not wanted" or the "population is two high" or "business/industry needs to flourish". People can do amazing things if we put our minds to it, let's stop using abuse and killing as a cop-out or "easy way out". It's not right. It's amazing these things are legal when it's a big time crime to rob a bank, run a stop sign, or do marijuana without hurting anyone (not that people should do these things either, but you get the comparison).

For NaughtyMossy Too many B/S (Facts?) in your post to cover all or them. I'll comment on a couple of them for now: " the reasoning supposedly for planned parent hood teaching safe sex isnt working ..... the very people who go, mostly go to have an abortion." The FACT is that only THREE, 3, Percent of Planned Parenthood services are abortion related. That is THREE out of ONE HUNDRED not as you said ".... the very people who go, mostly go to have an abortion." But then what matters about little things like facts when you are trying to prove your point? Might that be how you earned the nickname "Naughty ...." just another of your (facts?) "we next to hand out condoms, and birth control on the corner for free as it is, so being the case (planned parenting), why has it far from worked?" Condoms do work (when properly used) although not 100% of the time. Part of the problem with condoms and birth control is that the Republicans have spent millions of US dollars to teach Abstinence, a form of sex education that not only doesn't work but does actually result in far too many unplanned pregnancies when on the spur of the moment youngsters give in to the desires of the moment. Add that overwhelming situation to the false belief held by many teenagers that a girl can not get pregnant - another failing of faulty sex education being pushed by those on the right. BTW when a patient does visit Planned Parenthood for abortion services she is counseled on other options: abortion, adoption, and parenting and is also offered information of birth control and is assisted in a birth control plan. Every effort is made to help the patient with the assistance needed to make a repeat abortion un-necessary.

Another FACT to consider is that the number of abortions preformed in the US goes UP when a Republican is in the White House and likewise when a Democrat is in the White House the number of abortions performed goes DOWN.

Birth control is a sin the same as abortion , God said be fruitful and multiply . God said if he clothed the birds and animals and fed them ,what more would he do for you his greatest creation . Not having enough food to justify birth control, don't fly with GOD . All you females doing this practice, are destroying your own souls . Having children is how a woman is saved , becoming one flesh with her husband, just as we become one flesh with Christ. If you read the scriptures you will see this clearly , Bible says during the tribulation, 10 women shall cling to every man to take away her reproach . Taking birth control so you can have as much sex as you want , goes directly against God's plan . The Bible speaks of the women who drank a potion, which kept them from conceiving . A great example is the Christian couple who has 20 kids , they live comfortably ,they're a happy functioning family that god blesses, because they stand by the Word of GOD.

NaughtyMossy: FYI now you do know someone who benefited from the services of Planned Parenthood. I'm sorry that you have never met someone in need of "affordable" not free health care. None of the PP offices I went to in Indpls performed abortions. They were reproductive wellness centers that provided respectful income-based services to working class people that did and did not have health insurance. I am now 39 with no children and I never wanted children. I have praised Planned Parenthood ever since those days that I did not have the means to pay full cost. I never received "free" birth control handed out on a corner. I did receive the imperative annual health screenings that every woman needs by a staff that treated me with dignity. It's amazing how much you don't know.

Why do people have to bring religion into EVERYTHING?????? Why can't some of you people just read a story, such as this, and say the woman and her husband over the years, lived their lives via being examples of what the human experiment of love and compassion should reflect in all of our lives? I mean seriously, I'm a heathen and I can appreciate what this woman has done.

I agree it doesn't matter what religion one practices, however I disagree with you saying she is "a true Christian, one who follows the ways of Jesus Christ" A true Christian follows the ways of Jesus Christ yes, but the woman is a Chan' Buddhist in the Chinese tradition of Mahayana Buddhism "ZEN".

Therefore she is NOT a Christian following the ways of Jesus Christ. She is a Buddhist following the teachings of Buddha who believed we are all infinitly connected and we should do no harm to each other because eventually it will come back to you in the form of good or bad depending on what one does. (Karma)

Buddha was born in 400 BC (BCE) and Christ was born between 7 and 2 BC (BCE) therefore one must conclude that Jesus Christ was following the ways of Buddha.

you are referring to those that provide in clinic services. however, those that do not, who are free to so by current abortion laws, are given a referral to the closest clinic that will. THOSE referrals, make it eligable for the person low income, with affordable FREE CLINC services, that supply FREE BIRTH CONTROL to those who qualify out of the taxpayers pocket services.

people like you who obviously DO read the news, must read only the political crontroversy in your favor, (and next will be of fox news however i dont watch nor read fox, and the storys usually come from non other than MSNBC), have a very short term memory, or just like to read the title of a clip, and skip to comment?

ya know this crap is out there, but its a rare occation it makes the front page, most people dont seem to make it past. (i know, a lot to read, right?) but doing so will at least a better mindset of what goal it is you set to accomplish to go in your favor. wondering if you read the reasoning behind the creation of planned parent hood? if you do, why do you back such a racist means of anything from chritian-athiest or other means to deem as a benifit to mankind? i am more for population control than you think. but this relys mostly on the belief, if you have unprotected sex, and you know the possible results, then you should take responsibility for those actions. there IS adoption, as well, a lot of great want to be parents who would be more than willing to pay for costs, living, and so on. this even went on as a good idea for a while until it was hushed by those who support abortion.

just like i knew the results of my actions brought kids into this world, while i was unwed, i still am to this day accountable for those actions. its call responsibility. this naturally does not hold to to acts of incest, nor rape, so dont even go there, cause i wouldnt touch the 2 issues even in silence.

i do believe in a womans right to choose, but i draw a line on the basis of morality. not religion or other. i think more it is right for a person to stand ground on the choices they make, and bear the cross they chose to bear. if a woman who is pregnant is mudered, it goes as a double murder if the unborn baby also dies. in what kind of world can one not be held accountable for the other? because of choice?

      crazy parrots..... crazy parrots.....

Did you know that in Missouri from which Akin hails, the 'legitimate rape' guy, teaches abstinence only since 2010. Yep, those in their deep religious Christian convictions have taken MO over and deemed sexual activity to be kept in the dark, behind closed doors, under the covers - that adds to the 'naughty molly' way of life. BTW, there also was a documented increase in teen pregnancy, one parallels the other. Let's see, Palin was also an advocate of abstinence, didn't work for her two daughters now, did it.

It's too easy to forget the teen years, the awakening of the full body senses, the built-in propagation gene inherent in all humans. Teaching how the reproductive system works is the only way. You don't have to explain the entire intercourse process, you know. By 8 years old kids have already figured out what the mechanics are for intercourse. What they really do need is how the system works. It's a very natural process, like the digestive process, but more important. Teaching kids will keep them from STDs and possible pregnancy. Make it like a plumbing lesson, if you're uncomfortable. You don't need the erotic details that are your experience. Throw in the love stuff and religiousness as you mature, not the kids.

Meanwhile, yes we need to support Planned Parenthood, the almost last bastion against the voodoo of radical jihadists of the right-wing that are against solid education. PP personnel are trained and effective - they know how to talk with teens. They know how to care for young adults without causing discomfort. But remember, abortion is not the issue in the U.S., now that reproduction has been taken over by the VRJRW (see 2nd line in paragraph). The issue is CHOICE, which will be taken from women with a repub/tparty if they are elected. Today they'll say what they think you want to hear, tomorrow they'll be adjudicating to limit your freedom of CHOICE. Proven liars is the repub/tparty.

The problem with an embargo, or reinstating tariffs, or revoking "most favored nation" status from China is that Americans will never support ANYTHING that makes things cost more for them, and that is exactly what would happen. No more dirt-cheap goods, clothes, electronics, toys, etc. Most household goods would jump in price to a point where people will riot in the streets. After a few years, when manufacturing returned to the US (or went to Mexico), things would probably settle down, if there isn't an all-out war over the whole deal, but people in general are mostly too impatient and short-sighted to put up with the up-front costs.

              @Mortal man:

I agree with you that it should have ended. Most favored nation to China was one of the worst and most destructive things Clinton did, regardless of his good intentions. An alternative to revoking that status, which would be unpopular because it would cause price hikes in imported goods for Americans, would be to eliminate US tax breaks and subsidies for businesses that employ less than 75% of their workforce in the USA, and maybe offer tax incentives to businesses who employ over 75% in the USA. It seems simple, and I'm no economist, but I feel like it would be a good start to get us back on track.

U.S. companies relocated to China because of the low labor cost. Greed has taken the place of humanity in corporations, shareholder value is now our motto in the U.S. There will be more babies thrown in the dumpster, and women too, if a repub/tparty gets in. What business is it of a government to decide what we do with our bodies. And here you all are, condemning China for its policy of one child. We'll not have such a policy here, but we will have soon enough birthing centers so the repub/tparty can have our babies as their fodder for the wars they will cause. Already they are instigating against Iran. WE in the U.S. are ourselves hypocrites if we elect (the powers forbid!) a repub/tparty. Please take a very critical look behind their curtain.

Of course, though this woman CLEARLY qualifies for sainthood, the Vatican doesn't recognize anyone who doesn't belong to the Catholic cult and will undoubtedly ignore her. That's OK, because the Pope really does NOT control who reaches Heaven. This woman will certainly have a place waiting for her there.

I was reading an article in the papers some years back. In Philadelphia they were tearing down this old convent where nuns use to live. In the basement they found babies skeletons buried in the basement. They said the nuns were getting pregnant and when the baby were born they bury them alive in the basement. So no one would know.

The fact that this family had to dig thru trash to make a living but still took in children is mind blowing. This woman will truly be blessed.

Before you go on about the unborn fetus, how about taking care of the born children. Until we can feed, cloth, educate, and shelter those who are born, we shouldn't be forcing women to be unwilling incubators. Before we condemn others, we should examine how we treat our children. Republicans want to cut prenatal care, food stamps, Medicaid, housing assistance, school lunches, education, and any other assistance programs they can get away with, but outlaw contraception and abortion. So what do you think that leads to?

Sadly, those who care about aborted fetuses care little or nothing about the babies after they are born, demanding that no government tax money be spent on them if the need arises. It's hypocrisy at its finest.

A friend on mine volunteered recently in a children's home. She said there where kids there all ages who had in recently been taken away from their parents. A little five-year-old boy followed her around the entire time simply because she played with him. We need more contraception available. There are many people out there who simply should not be having children. What are the chances of these poor kids finding stability and having good lives? Who's to know. We need to stop worrying so much about the unborn and visit our local children's homes so we can see the reality of what can happen to a child who is neglected for whatever reason.

Please show you back up link of the majority think this way. I know Obama does not care for the Aborted Baby nor after it is born or survives for he has taken the extreme position as being the ONLY member of the Illinois legislature to not support a bill to provide medical care for newborns who survived failed late-term abortions. Now that is Extreme indeed.

Even with abortion America is over run with parents who just should not have children. Our court system and foster homes are streched to the point that kids suffer. We allow people to take drugs and drink while pregnant at the cost of the child. If abotion became anymore of an obsticle than it already is, I can't imagine how many kids will end up suffering. Kids and animal (yes lumped together) are nothing more than property. Kids have no rights crazy mom and dad can play years of head games costing and the children long term trama. I have 4 adopted kids I love, but the damage done by bio) mom is heart breaking! After 6 kids she can no longer have children, but my kids are drug affected and will struggle for the rest of thier lives.

With proper sexual education that number would be halved. But the voodoo entrenched jihadist evangelistas of the right-wing prefer to leave sex in the back seat of a car, in the dark, under a blanket to keep sex 'erotic.' In MO where abstinence is THE only teaching allowed, pregnancy has increased and STDs are on the rise. So much for abstinence. BTW, Palin also taught abstinence at home. She now has two daughters impregnated during their abstinence training.

Earthgirl, I think you are mistaken. There was a report that Palin's son had a shotgun wedding last year, but no indication that her other daughter is pregnant (and it would be all over if it was). Since the son is around 23 years old, it is hardly a 'teen sex' issue. There was a nutcase on a forum that was claiming Willow was pregnant in '08 when she was 14. Possibly that person got the girls mixed up.

Ironically, just yesterday I read about the Duggans returning to the TLC reality show. But what this woman has done IS THE REALITY. She is the gift from God, the blessing that these poor unwanted children needed. This would make a much better reality show. And she rescused 30 children, feed them, housed them, clothed them, taught them about a better life and most of all shared all the love and compassion that they needed and was their "Mother". That's 10 more than the Duggans, since they don't seem to count the last little angle as #20, but another is on the way, and will join the ranks, without near the amount of time spent by their "MOTHER". and they don't face all the obstacles these little angels are enduring. Yes MOTHER DUGGAN, you're fruitful as God has let you be but not Sainthood material...................TLC help the truely needy, the comments would be so much more compassionate., as this is really the way the would works, not by an ovulation calendar and then prayers to make it all ok even with all the added risks, your ratings and whatever medical you may not have to pay. Two women doing what God has asked for, but for decidedly different reasons. But MOTHER of 30 is the Saint and will be rewarded greatly. She is providing love that was not there before and that's what will make these children of God rich in life.

Americans who abhor many Chinese government policies and the plight of the Chinese people are the very same people who flock to stores to buy products made in China so that they can save a few dollars. You can't have it both ways. Place the blame squarely on the shoulders of those responsible, which are the American corporations exploiting the cheap labor in Asia for the sole purpose of maximizing profits. Left in the dust are the exploited Asian workers and the millions, if not tens of millions of unemployed Americans who have suffered as the result of this shameful yet legal exploitation and outsourcing. You can also blame our astute politicians in Congress who encourage such exploitation and the outsourcing of our jobs by offering tax incentives to the American corporations that are moving their manufacturing and services overseas.

To add insult to injury, one must also consider that the majority of oil and gas from newly drilled wells in the U.S. is sold to the highest bidder overseas, mostly China, as is much of our current production. Where do you think the tar sands oil from Canada is going to go? The proposed Keystone XL pipeline will transport the Canadian oil to Texas refineries and the refined products will go to the highest bidder in Asia. These American fossil fuel energy companies tell you that they need to do all this drilling so that the U.S. can drastically reduce the importation of foreign oil and create millions of new American jobs, when in fact little or none of the oil and gas is destined for American consumption and these "new jobs" are nothing but a figment of your imagination. The new drilling and the building of pipelines has nothing to do with making life better for Americans but rather maximizing the profits of the fossil fuel industry at the expense of American consumers.

American corporations don't give a @!$%# about American consumers. The corporations of other western nations don't give a @!$%# about their own fellow citizens. They're simply exploiting people and resources for maximum financial gain. That's OK; continue thumping your chests while your heads remain buried in the sand, displaying your patriotism and concern for Americans while being totally ignorant of the real situation. Meanwhile, the people suffering as a result of this "status quo", both foreign and domestic, will continue to suffer. Continue doing business with and buying products from a country that cares little or nothing about these "trash babies" and the welfare of its citizens. Continue showing your sympathy for these poor, exploited people while enabling it to occur. Continue displaying your disgust with China while supporting China with your purchases and outsourced jobs. Continue sending your hard earned money overseas. Continue electing the politicians who allow this @!$%# to occur.

Money is God. Money is God.

Bad Animal, perhaps you have not seen an Ultrasound or think children come from a Stork. What is in the womb is certainly a human. A Person just does not majically suddenly become a child at the hospital bed. Then again, Stalin did not think non-Communists were humans or Hitler did not think Jews as less than humans, so their "choice" was to kill them off.

Maybe Bad Animal thinks that the species of a fetus is not determined until after it exits the womb. I wonder- what prevents human women from having kittens? If what a pregnant human female is carrying in her womb isn't a very young human being, what is it?

Yep, when they are 18, get a job or further your education to gain independence for true pursuit of Happiness not the dependence of welfare for vote the the Marxist Wing of the Democrats would demand.

But had she been an American, more than likely she and her husband would have qualified for public assistance. Most of the right leaning contributors on this site, would have said "Get a Real Job!"

That's where you're wrong, smilingphoebs. Most "right leaners" believe that people like this are the ones who do need the help of the programs intended to help the truly needy. Abandoned children are at the top of that list- that's why foster parents are paid by the government to care for children like this. We just don't like being forced to pay young, healthy individuals to sit around and do nothing but breed voters for the left. Welfare, food stamps, etc. should be used to support those people who are too sick or elderly to work, children with no parents to care for them, and those people who have been laid off from their jobs and are actively looking for more work. We "right leaners" don't begrudge the TRULY needy one red cent.

This woman is truly pro-life in rescuing all these abandoned children. The hypocrites here who proclaim that "life is precious" have nothing to do with it once it's born. They don't even want to provide universal health care for all life unless it's profitable for the corporations.

The people rescued by her should have a statue made of her and placed in her city as a reminder that life is truly precious when you go out of your way to preserve it. God bless her in her final days on earth.

I will gladly pay more taxes for universal health care. After all, my taxes have been paying for wars for years.

Absolutely correct. Obviously the anti abortion folks have never worked in social services or witnessed the hell a child goes through when they're unwanted. And most of them are Republicans who don't want to shell out a dime to help pay for these children. It is the height of hypocrisy. Of course, you could argue they want them born so they'll have someone to fight their wars.....they don't really care about the children, they just want to enforce their moral code on everyone else.

that's quite a blanket statement.... so because of the actions of a few we should assume everyone is like them? With our mass shootings epidemic the last month or so, would we as Americans like someone to label us as madmen?

One woman saved 30 babies "over the years" from trash cans and the dump ?

Those people are little more than animals !

How come one of their best people has to dig through trash to survive ?

It's a testament to Chinas complete and total lack of a moral compass.

uh well uh, seems like this woman did more for mankind than just being elected President. What I'm trying to say, is that the bar for the award of the Nobel Prize was pretty low to award it to President Obama. Looking at the bar, this woman should be awarded the Prize.

It's obvious, the Chinese government is not of civility and humanity, the Chinese people must rise up and reclaim the value what is theirs. Chinese history and culture is not about communism so why they let the party took it all away from them and force them into some nutcake's philosophy as a guidance is just mindboggling.

It's absolutely frightening that they might be dragging Hong Kong down.

Unfortunately China is a fascist state, they control the media, the internet, the population, encourage nationalistic riots, condone shoddy construction (falling bridges, defective trains, substandard buses), counterfeit food, criminal hospitals and doctors that value money over saving people's lives (prisoners have their kidney's stolen while unknowingly anesthetized!).

And what's even more mind boggling, people think they're going to be a "superpower"! Why they continue to worship that mass murderer Mao is beyond me. The CCP has definitely hijacked the Chinese culture.
