Facekini craze hits China beach as swimmers try to avoid a tan

Chinese beachgoers wear body suits and protective head masks, dubbed "facekinis," on a crowded public beach in Qingdao, on Aug. 16.

BEIJING – In the West, getting a tan is one of the main reasons for going to the beach.

But in China, some are going to extraordinary lengths to avoid getting a bit of sun with a new item of beachwear – dubbed the Facekini – causing something of a stir in the coastal tourist city of Qingdao, Shandong Province.

The masks completely cover the swimmers' heads, revealing only their eyes, noses, and mouths.

The styles and colors of the masks suggest a huge happy beach party attended by some lesser superheroes, Mexican wrestlers and perhaps a few bank robbers is underway. In fact, government officials have become concerned that the masks could be used to rob banks, according to a report in The New York Times.

"These have been extremely popular," Zaizaibao (仔仔寶), an online seller from Henan on shopping Internet site taobao.com, said.

Another online store sold 542 masks, which come in different colors and patterns, in just 30 days. "We are already out of the pink ones.... All of them sell well. Orange is the most effective in protecting people from sea creatures."

Users say the face masks are useful in protecting against insects and jellyfish.

The masks are an outward expression of a Chinese understanding of beauty in terms of skin color.

"I myself don't mind getting tanned, but I can see why pale skin is attractive," Alina Zhao, a college student in the U.S. who grew up in Zhejiang, China, said.

"It definitely has to do with the history of China, which is largely an agricultural society,” she added. “Getting tanned means you work outside in the fields a lot, so skin color is like an indicator of your social status. The fairer you are, the wealthier or more respected you seem."

Umbrellas on a sunny day
In fact, Facekini is only one out of many attempts by Chinese people to stay fair. The number of umbrellas to be seen in Chinese cities on a hot, sunny day might appear bizarre to many non-Chinese people.

"I first became aware of the phenomenon when I lived in Taiwan for the summer," Simone Cote, from Vermont and currently working in Beijing, said. "I constantly saw that women covered themselves when they went out. They wore pants often, and yes, umbrellas everywhere."

Cote was asked "Why is your skin so dark?" by her host mother in Taiwan.

Within this underlying concept of what is beautiful, the Facekini was perhaps a logical development.

A user of the mask commented in Chinese on taobao.com that "this item is very effective in keeping the UV [ultra-violet light] out, and it's very comfortable. With this, you can do whatever you want on a beach, with no worries of getting burned or tanned. It's really recommended."

Another user, Tongchao, seems to have debated between the benefit of not getting tanned and the possibility of getting laughed at in this mask. "Okay. I've become the focused again, but this item is really useful. It's actually not stuffy at all. I really like it!" Looks like he or she has made a choice – but not an easy one.

When asked if she would ever wear one, Alina gave her answer without a second thought.

"Of course no! I was never into sunscreen – I'll never get this fair anyway, so why bother? I would rather enjoy the sun."

If you had ever swum in tropical seas you might see the benefit of protection from jellyfish.

There are over a billion Chinese. Maybe we are the ones who should reconsider the damage sun does to our skin.

I can easily see the Chinese government, as well as many others around the world having security concerns with these. After all, anything that hides your appearance could be used for criminal purposes. I believe that some countries, France comes to mind, do in fact have laws against covering your face in public or are considering such laws. In any event, wearing something like this would invite being stopped by police in a lot of countries including here in the US.

Just an observation, kind of a mean one, but...

Some of the bodies I see stuffed into bikinis in this country ought to consider covering up. Perhaps a facekini combined with a moo-moo? Honestly, there seems to be no shame in strutting your stuff, even if it jiggles like a bowl full of jelly or the muffin top hangs down so far one must consider whether the body is clad at all below the waist and this garb isn't just worn on the beach but to the local Walmart!

I heard that Julian Assange has ordered 200 of these Facekini's and is having a big party in the Equadorean Embassy, with 200 of his closest friends. After the party, they plan on running from the Embassy in all different directions, with everyone wearing one! I wonder what the Bobbies would do then, besides crap their pants?

Orange is the most effective in protecting people from sea creatures

Color does matter, though I wonder how accurate this is. A friend shopping for his first surf board was advised to avoid "yum yum" yellow as it's the most likely color to attract sharks. Orange can be close to yellow. Perhaps it's jellyfish that are put off by orange.

And don't even get me started on those smokin hot wetsuits WoooHooo!!! If you plan on pickin up one of these beauties, make sure there are a couple of lumps up top, otherwise you might get a little surprise when you get "her" home!

These masks could be a boon to ugly girls too. Just think, they could be flirting with the lifeguard all day, and he would have no idea that underneath she is a beast! Or maybe fat chicks in bikinis could wear them and no one would know who they are while out struttin their stuff!

Americans are the fattest group of people in the world. Obesity is the #1 driver of increased health care costs in the past decade and it will be the #1 driver of increased health care costs for the next 2 decades.

Americans are a bunch of fatties, LOSE WEIGHT AMERICA.

I watched a show about the Chinese girls obsession with light skin. In their culture dark skin is equated with being a peasant farm laborer and light skin with wealth and upper class people (the fact you don't have to work in the fields or in the sun). This show had women who had burned their faces using skin lighteners and bleaches in an attempt to have a pale complexion. And most of these girls are young in their twenty's very sad. Just like in America young women ruin their skin in tanning beds and with heavy makeup just in reverse. Vanity no wonder its a sin.

People seem to forget that fair or tan has gone in and out of fashion in this country also. For the exact same reason as the Chinese state in the article. Which is in fashion really depends on what your economy is based on, that is whether being out in the sun is considered leisure or work.

Unfortunately, I think all the citizens of China also realize they have invisible muzzles over their mouths to keep them from saying whatever is on their mind lest they wind up in prison and never enjoy a day at the beach again. The beaches and skyskrapers may look nice, yet its all under the guise of a ruthless censoring dictatorship.

I think pure white skin is very attractive on women. I know a girl who always covered herself and is now a woman with not a wrinkle. It sure beats some 40 year old woman that is turning into shoe leather. Americans associate a tan with being healthy. Anyone can roast out in the sun.

        #1.44 - Tue Aug 21, 2012 11:52 AM EDT

Most people would do fine with high-SPF waterproof sunscreen. But those with lupus and certain skin/pigment diseases might find these facekinis just the thing to protect themselves from harmful sun rays.

So what's the priority? Scaring away jellyfish? Keeping white skin? Protecting against skin cancer? Hiding your identity? These things just look too hot to be wearing at the beach unless you're there for swimming, not for the sun and sand.

Quite probably not. My wife came the US for the first time about a year ago, and she had never heard of it. And she grew up and lived in a medium-sized Chinese city of 6,000,000 people. When we visit her hometown I bring sunscreen with me because I can't easily find it there.

Having spend a fair amount of time in modern China I can see from many of the posts here that many Americans are completely ignorant of modern China.

I slam the Chinese over lots of things, but this isn't one of them. If you notice, most forty year old Asian women look 30, yet most white women that age look 60.

Actually, how many people put on makeup, eye shadow, lipstick, eyeliner, dye their hair, end up getting plastic surgery to change their appearances? Some may think having fair skin is a sign of being wealthy and tan being poor but look how many go into having expensive clothing, purses, shoes, jewelry, cars and homes who really can't afford them. Just so others will think they are better off then they really are.

. It seems those who are poor, lack the money to buy such items and live close to the land, are usually the only ones not trying to pretend to be something they really aren't. Humility is more often to be found with those who can't afford vanity.

And here in the USA the mind set is that if you have a tan you're considered to be hip, well-off, and athletic. People here actually pay money to exposed themselves to something that drastically increases their risk of skin cancer. How does that make more sense?

@ Perfect Stance......I think you need to look a bit at history and discover things Women did to appear socially "appropriate." This is nothing new by any means. In America, it considered women to be cultured and refined if they were pale too. Let alone, women had to learn to play the piano, as it was also a sign of culture and refinement. Frankly, I don't care if the Chinese want to wear masks at the beach, not for me to judge.

BLS-744.....sorry, nice try but many white women DO look 45 at 25, NOT just white men. In fact, I would say white men age better than them--only some with hairline issues tend to really look old and natural blond white men seem to for some reason age a little faster in the face. But of course there are exceptions. Many Asian women do NOT age well either---it is really only Chinese and Japanese, not all the other ones as some have weird large open pores in their faces. African descent women really age the best of all women of color, but no way our Eurocentric society will ever give them credit. But ask a white woman to tell you who ages the best and an honest, secure one will say black women. Fact!

It's not only the Chinese, but also in India it is a sign of higher class/caste to have lighter skin. While in the Western world tanned skin is a sign that you have the money to go on a beachy vacation somewhere, in a lot of third-world countries it is vice-versa - tan skin is a sign that you are laboring somewhere outdoors all day to make a living, rather than lounging inside your home and away from the sun.

Usually 25 year olds aren't old enough to show the type of aging you claim. Now, I could agree with you that many 45-50 year old women look 10-20 years older than they are. By that age they've had many years to overindulge in whatever it is that causes them to look bad (usually sun bathing or illicit drugs/alcohol). Which goes back to WHY the Chinese are that worried about sun exposure. Also, poor aging on scale is usually the result of economic class, not race. Compare black people that live in industrialized nations (USA, Europe, etc.) and you'll probably see them age much better than poor black people still living in the wilds of Africa. Fact!

I agree that there are many, many beautiful black women. But also Chinese. And white. And hispanic. I wonder how loud you would have cried if someone had said white women age better than black women. Anyone not afro-centric is racist, hunh!

You had to have money to have the time and leisure to lay out in the sun. So our like of tanned skin (which really only came about after WWII is for the same reason!

These Chinese practices to preserve a youthful appearance should supercede the ridiculous tanning culture of the US. Tanning produces a healthy set of leopard spots.

Well....all i can say is that after enjoying the "salt" water in those things they might end up rethinking the benefits to their skin idea. Salt is as abrasive as sandpaper and after a long day frolicking around in those things... when they peel them off they are liable to look like somebody took a circular sander to their faces.

Having their nose and lips and eyelids exposed and protruding through those little holes with a bunch of course salt crystals grinding around in there every time they turn their heads will end that fad pretty quickly i suspect.

The salt in the ocean is dissolved, and as such there are no salt crystals.

Everyone knows most Asians want to be White. Look at the Japanese. Look at the Thai and Filipinos who powder the crap out of their faces. Look at the Indian culture aka Bollywood....all the actors and actresses are pale or trying to get pale. So Mary Mary go fck with your garden and let me know how it grows and stinks.

I do agree with Perfect Stance that many Asian cultures, especially Japanese, want to be white but at the sme time loathe whites and think they are superior to Europeans. It is really rather weird when you stop to really consider it all. Impossible for most to be pale though because most of them are really dark, especially Vietnamese that live in the interior of the country--they look almost negroid in the face and hair texture. Really strange looking at them in my uncle's war pictures, I almost thought they were some rarely seen African tribe. LOL!

Perfect Stance, when I have to be around people like you it makes me wonder why people think racism is so bad. You almost make it seem like common sense. By your grammar and syntax, I doubt you are very highly educated. Maybe 8th grade grammar with low report card grades. Did you struggle when you read the Twilight books? Try to pay more attention in school this year. There's still hope for you, son.

They don't want to be white! Where the hell did you hear that? The asian cultures have viewed porcelian skin on women as a sign of beauty and breeding for about a thousand years before Marco Polo walked down the silk road. I'm thinking that you truly believe Asian people are yellow.LOL. Now that's racist...if you want to go there! Why did people think they were yellow? Well...because that is the hue that exposure to the sun turns them. Thus...just like European aristocrats, those people in Asia who wanted to announce their linneage through appreance avoided the sun,so as not to be looked upon like a common laborer, but hey if you want to attach racism to something that is a cultural practice thousands of years old! Then more power to you!

My impatiens are coming along beautifully, thanks for asking. and my dahlias are growing amazingly well and smell absolutely wonderful. As far as education goes, I had a college reading level when I was in 8th grade thank you very much. By time I was in 10th grade I had colleges lining up around the block to get me on full academic scholarships. I've probably read more books in one month than you have ever seen in your life. I have a university education my dear and for a 28 year old woman I am doing quite well so lets not go there, you and I. And, hunt79 is absolutely right! they do not want to be white, they want to stick with their culture that has been around for thousands of years before our culture was even thought of.

It's funny isn't it Mary? How these people ridicule cultures for being different and actually arrogantly suggest that they want to be more like us,when in truth and as has been known by well traveled souls on this earth for hundreds of years, that the American culture is the outcast society by large majority! It's amazing to me how some people in this country have become so comfortable sitting in judgement of the very cultures that helped to create their own society.

Do they not know what America is? And if not... how in the name of God have they managed to miss that one? Our society is or should i say "was" the culmination of world culture in a diverse blending. The so called "melting pot" yet they have somehow come to believe that the rest of the world is the subculture and we are the standard by which they are all derived. It's laughable really..but it's not one bit funny!

This attitude, though not altogether new to this nation has taken on epidemic proportion in the last 12 years and it is fairly obvious to me that the primary goal of crashing those planes through the twin towers has been overwhelmingly achieved! We have in short order become a society of pure fear and loathing, an intolerant and insular nation that was once birthed out of diversity and uniqueness and if we allow this proprietal hatred to continue to fester un -checked those ghouls who orchastrated 9/11 will have achieved their victory!

it's funny in a sad way. it's also insanely ignorant as well to have the beliefs that american culture is the only culture and all others should conform. american culture is relatively new compared to that of china or japan. our country is still a baby when compared to others. My family is from Hungary and they brought over their love for their culture whereas my husbands brought theirs from Ireland. Melting pot as you said. too bad people like Perfect have nothing better to do than drink beer, scratch balls and watch football on TV and occasionally troll news sites.

Pale skin is beautiful as defined by Chinese culture? I hope the Chinese understand the world is much larger than their myopic culture, and at some point they will have to come to grips with that concept. Brings back memories of Jim crow.

Covering their skin will lower their rates of melanoma considerably. As an nurse who has treated patients with deadly melanoma, I think this is a great idea, although I prefer a broad brimmed straw hat. More comfortable.

                            Luke,

don't waste your breath on these slobs. You can't reason with a bunch of underexposed jerko's who actually pride themselves on cultural ignorance and absolutely despise the thought of different and dissimiliar to anything that doesn't fit perfectly into the bland and finite world that exists between their couch and the remote control. Yet, they actually have the unmitigated gall to be defensive of their arrogant ignorance. We've truly crossed into some warped and disturbed world, where people in this nation pride themselves on being ignorant of the world and anything else that doesn't revolve solely around them... and they absolutely detest the thought of having to learn anything of the world other than what is spoon fed them through the glass box.

Don't be angry with them, pity them! Though in truth they don't even deserve that! Anybody that would willingly limit themselves to firing off of a half of a cylinder and actually consider themselves superior because of it,doesn't deserve anything... but utter disdain and ridicule and they are beyond any hope or want of redemption. So better yet just ignore them when you can and maybe they will crawl back into the cess pool they wallowed out of and let people with expanded brain activity speak among themselves without interruption from a bunch of mouth breathers.

The best advice we EVER received regarding Melanoma came from my husbands ASIAN surgeon. Very intelligent and straight forward, not like some of the American doctors ( some not all) that are obviously more concerned about their wardrobe or status.

Chinese go extreme to not get tanned. Americans go extreme to get tanned. Not to mention tanning salon with risk of getting cancer.

I wonder which is more extreme.

The pale skin is VIEWED as pretty and dark skins are viewed as rough and dirty. This is the modern perception now. So, for people who do not live in China, set out of America and look at the world like anybody else does.

Because brown people are NOT viewed as having rough or 'dirty' skin--naturally dark tan to mahogany brown and all the shades in between are some of the prettiest skin around AND so is fine English porcelain skin--truly equally beautiful. I am certain your semantics were just unclear here.....

As I said above, this notion of "light-skinned superiority" is widespread and deeply-rooted in different cultures; the Indian caste system, Chinese and African-American self-loathing, European and Japanese superiority complexes. Our entire human experience is anchored by "Light > Dark," and this has helped taint our relationships with one another for centuries. It will take some time for our species to get over it, but it might never go away for good.

China is undergoing the same cultural evolution that was experienced in Europe during the Industrial Revolution.

Prior to that time the wealthy could live a comfortable indoor life, outside was only that part of the world between your home and your carriage, the common people worked out doors in the fields in the sun and a tan was a badge of poverty.

When the Industrial Revolution hit and the common people were set to work in factories, or the mines that fed the factories, the wealth promptly changed their habits and flocked to beaches, boating, and cruises and a tan became a badge of wealth comfort and leisure.

The current Chinese disdain for a tan isn't so much a Chinese thing as a Human thing, been there, done that.

Yeah, just give it a hundred years when the current generation (and accompanying mindset) dies off and society modernizes. Then the thought process will be the affluent ones are the ones traveling and getting some sun, and the poorer ones are staying indoors working. Then everybody will want to be tan.

England in the late 1500's sugar was a new and expensive treat only the wealthy could afford, and it blackened their teeth. The less afluent would blacken their teeth artificially to keep with the fashion. All in all people are an odd lot.

For those screaming racism...the Chinese have an entirely different frame of reference that people living in the State do. To infer that they are racist and need to change their culture, are the ones suffering from the need to change. Understand what you are yelling about before you spout of nonsense. It is very common for agricultural cultures to prize white skin, not as a slight to blacks,but...oh never mind. ignorant people are going to act like asses because they are asses...

I heard that. A co-worker invited me to go out with her and a group of her girlfriends after work so '......can get to know you'. I replied, i thought you all disliked dark skinned people. She looked puzzled for a moment, then something registered and she replied 'Oh! that's over there, but you are supposed to look like that' :-) :-)

Even today in the USA if you spend enough time outdoors you might wind up with a "Red Neck" and be considered an unsophisticated bumpkin.

FYI, Redneck has nothing to do with the sun..The term Redneck was given to union, yes union strikers in the coal mines that self identified being in the union with a RED KERCHIEF WORN AROUND THEIR NECK. So-o-o if you are a union member..you...are....a....redneck......Period! Now, as Paul Harvey used to say..that IS the rest of the story.

The term Redneck does NOT just have that meaning sir....sorry. Been in the Deep South ALL my life. It refers to a derogatory definition of poor, undeducated, rural whites that worked in the fields primarily in the South, causing the sun to burn their skin, especially their necks...the word is sort of similar in meaning as terms like"poor white trash"....The wearing of the red neckerchiefs came almost a century later at the beginning of the 1900s (a few decades before your coal miners started using the term) when poor whites in the Deep South began to own the term with pride instead of being ashamed of it, wearing these items around their necks to show solidarity and pride in being "rednecks" and Southern Democrats (different from the national Democratic party platform).

You're both wrong. "Redneck" is a term originating in England. Look it up. A particular group of people wore red scarves. When they came to the New World, they settled predominantly in the the South. They were quite the boisterous/uncouth bunch, both in England and after coming here. Those characteristics stayed with them and they lost the scarves so over the years it was assumed that "red neck" referred to sunburned skin resulting from the way of life they adapted to in the US. Perhaps the union scarves were an homage to the original rednecks or maybe it was just a coincidence and the same moniker was given to them. Either way, the term did not originate with the unions and it did not originate from sunburns on the back of necks.

Culture is seldom distillable down to simple pithy statements. In some part of China, black TV personalities and newscasters (African emigres) are all the rage now (just like how Asian newscasters were in the US, once upon a time). China is a complex, diverse place, large enough do its own thing, just like the US is. It's generally a good thing not to generalize too much, I think.

You don't know what you are speaking of...."blacks don't like real dark mates..too jiggy".... no one in the black community even uses that term. Good Hell! LOL! So because of this stupid statement, I must get way off topic....I hope the community will forgive me but this deserves a rebuttal.

And what is this "Real" blacks term? You do know they come in all shades and features, EVEN in sub-Saharan Africa and especially in the Americas where race mixing was so prevalent between black women and white men--a black that is not "mixed" can, as a result, often look more "mixed" than a person that actually has a white parent but actually have very little outside blood--just pulled recessive genes from that relative. There are no REAL blacks in commercials because WHITE mostly Jewish men control Madison Avenue idiot! They have always tended to use lighter skinned blacks/Latinos in plain sight because that is what makes THEM feel more comfortable and they believed we felt the same way. The Madison Avenue compromise of the 70s--"yeah we will start showcasing blacks, but using blacks that don't look like blacks" as sort of a way to not offend the Southerners while advertising that product. EVERYONE knows this apparently except YOU! So blacks aren't making those decisions--corporations determine which ad agencies and for that matter which ad campaigns they want to use. If you go to Western Europe (minus the Iberian peninsula) where whites are no where near as self-centered and appreciate all beauty, beautiful black models--especially from the Afro-Carib islands, are all over billboards. Notice this same Jewish white media also is determined to shove black guy/white girl down everyone's throat when most black men date black women, and most white women date us, and the most common interracial pairing is WHITE/ASIAN but we never see them depicted anywhere. (Info from U.S. Census Bureau)

They also continue to 'feminize' the white male and are insistent on making him look "square", out of touch with society, "corny", weak and/or racist and ignorant. While painting the black male to be a stock broker on Wall Street with a degree from Morehouse---well we all know that only a fraction of their group have this life. More black women go to college (15:1 ratio of black women vs black men college degrees) but they are often portrayed as the 'welfare queen'. I can go on and on....and let us not get started on how the media portrays poor Mexicans. RME!

Beauty comes in all shades and is subjective. I don't care so much about color as I do skin damage. All shades of skin can be gorgeous or hideous depending on its condition.
