Volunteers in Chongqing work to rescue over 1,100 dogs that were destined for slaughter.
BEIJING – Call it a Chinese New Year miracle. Earlier this week more than 1,100 dogs destined for the slaughterhouse in Chongqing were saved from an ignoble ending by a pet-loving Good Samaritan.
The China Daily reported that 1,137 dogs were rescued on Monday from the back of a flatbed truck by a 40-year old blogger and volunteer at the Chongqing Small Animal Protection Association (CSAPA) surnamed Peng. Peng found the dogs crammed into tight cages that were stacked high atop each other.
The dogs, who had been condemned to slaughter for food, were instead rescued and taken by CSAPA volunteers to an abandoned pig farm where they were given food, water and medical treatment.
In such cramped quarters, the dogs were reported to have been in poor health and some were found already dead inside their cages. By Thursday 16 dogs had died from injury or distemper while another 30 dogs had been sent to a veterinarian hospital in Chongqing for treatment.

The rescued dogs soon became a sensation in this central Chinese metropolis and hundreds of volunteers and donations began flooding in. One man donated nearly 1,000 square feet of warehouse space to house the dogs for free while there is now enough food to feed the dogs for the next 20-30 days.
But the biggest immediate concern right now is finding enough professional volunteers to help take care of the dogs during the busy Chinese New Year holiday when most people empty out of the big cities and head back to their hometowns.
Long term, many people are wondering how they will find homes for so many dogs. The CSAPA predicts about 20 percent of the dogs will eventually be adopted, but the majority of them will likely never be claimed. The association is now considering whether to solicit donations to build dog houses for the remaining animals.
China has seen a rash of similar animal rescues in recent years. In April of last year, animal lovers banded together and raised $17,960 to pay a truck owner who was holding 580 dogs in cages.
China currently has no animal cruelty laws – a notion made problematic by the still large agrarian population – but as of October of last year, regulations issued by the Ministry of Agriculture require dogs and cats to be quarantined before being shipped around China.
More photos from the rescue can be seen here.

See now, free-range dogs would have been tastier...
Europeans partake on their own dog-meat recipes, such as the Gedorttes Hundfleisch, which are usually farm-raised, but the more-popular "weird meat" that Europeans enjoy more than the Chinese is horse meat. Horse in China is considered "man's best friend", and thus rarely used for nourishment. Speaking of which, dog is an incredible source of protein-nourishment for millions of starving children around the world. Should we increase the industrialized-mass killing of cows and pigs, or put the millions of unwanted dogs here in America onto desperately needy people's dinner plates, that would otherwise uselessly become ill-fated to the death chambers of the Humane Society?
Nice man.. For a second i though the government was going to prosecute him for some reason.
Good job Peng! Thank you
World Wildlife Fund (WWF) embraces China and keep kissing their behind about animal protections and blame other countries. Stop donation to WWF and let China pays for the wildlife support.
The Vhinese government shoukld be held liable for this and provide shelter and food and water for these poor helpless animals.
Eating dog===barbaric
But it's okay to eat cows, pigs, chicken, lamb, ducks, horses, owls, etc.?
You know, that is an interesting question. I think that dogs should not be eaten because they have been genetically engineered by selective breeding to be a companion animal to Man. Farm animals on the other hand have been breed just for us to eat. Period.
>... I feel like eating Chinese tonite.
Let them eat bugs like normal
Not me. Malamine fed Chinese with chromium additives are tasteless. But if they have some free ranch organic fed stuff....
Shih Tzu Fu Yung - not on my list of favorites, but somewhere a guy with a wok is chowing some up.
Seems cruel to our western minds, but it's not any worse than how our corporate farming operations treat animals. We look the other way, because it's not "Fido". Food produced without respect can't be nourishing, but maybe that's why we're sicker than ever, spending millions on health care. Just sayin'.
Good point about us being sicker than ever.
so i guess Macdonalds isnt the best anymore...
Taste like pork, personally I prefer cat (taste like chicken)...
The US eats veal. If you really want to get sick, research how that is grown...

BTY - It is illegal to kill dogs in the USA for food. But you can prepare fresh 'road kill', according to a New Bern, NC Court ruling...
Gung Hey Fat Choy puppy dogs!.
I have worked in China for the last 10 years and this is VERY common. In Chinese 5 star hotels you can see "stewed dog meat" on the buffet. I have also seen MANY of the trucks packed with dogs on the highway.
People who stole food animals had a name in the old west - "rustler". We're sympathetic, of course, because we don't consider eating dogs acceptable. However many indians (India, not far west) who consider cows sacred would sympathize wth rustlers. Not a moral issue - just one of different customs.
You are totally correct Dr. J. It is a matter of custom nor a moral issue. Most of Western society finds some animals "fit" for food and others are taboo for one reason or another. Before we judge we need to understand that this.
Different cultures different foods. Here in the US the thought of eating horse meat is unacceptable. WHY? Has some horse meat while in Europe---well prepared and tasty--though definitely different than beef or pork.
The people of India think it's sacriligous to eat beef, the Jewish don't eat pork-- are they wrong??
My husband is Japanese - I have seen him eat crickets!
Many Chinese folks like to eat dogs and cats too. Many of my friends (in China) like eating dogs. Some do not. I never tried eating dog meat and never will. There is one city where dogs are not eaten, because it saved some lives. I can't remember the city name.
These dogs were rescued because people can more readily accept them as companions who suffer and have emotional lives. Would they have still cared so much if they had been beef or chicken?
Now I personally wouldn't want to eat a dog, but really, if humans eat other animals, what is the big deal about these dogs going to market? As long as the dogs weren't stolen, what is the difference if someone eats a pig or a cow or a dog or a horse or a dog? Chickens in the US are put in just the same situation as those dogs in the story, no one is stopping chicken trucks to rescue the birds....
I don't think that animals should be treated cruelly, but they are animals. Nothing wrong with eating them.
I know it is a different culture, but it makes me sick to think of it. Guess it is because of having dogs as pets all my life and loving them. Raised with a police dog, that protected me . I have a little rescue dog now, he is a lot of company, gives unconditional love. He was under a year when I got him. Scared little fellow, didn't take long for him to know no matter what he did he had a home and someone to love him. Dogs have feeling and they show, in their eyes. Dogs are smart and yes they know how to work you same as a small child. As you can tell I love my dogs and they are a lot of company for me.
i don't understand, the Chinese I have met seem to be afraid of dogs, so why/how could they eat them? maybe this isn't true.
It is!
Cindy-how can you be alive in this day and age and have never seen the documentaries and the reports on shows like 20/20 and Primetime that have shown what goes on in Eastern countries especially China, documenting the cruelty these animals endure on their way to the dinner plate? Monkeys, cats, dogs, rats.. You must be very young or have your head buried in the sand. I mean no offense, but I can hardly believe you haven't read or seen anything reporting on these matters.
People are animals, maybe we should eat them too.
Dogs and cats are pets. Cows are not. Nor pigs, ect. Slaughter @!$%#ing China!!!!! Put the China Government on the dinner plate and feed them to the animals. @!$%#ed up Sick Bastards!!!!!
A FOOLS ERRAND -- are the words Dwight David Eisenhower used to describe the prospect of sending our men to fight a land war in Asia. Therefore, it is best for us to refrain from criticizing the way other people live their lives because, in most cases, their "weird" behavior is part of a set of practices and beliefs they have passed down from generation to generation for millinea. Keep this in mind, as we fail to address our problems and become weaker, China grows stronger. Besides that, it is bad form to tell your biggest creditor that you think he is a savage.
A friend of mine said that there used to be a lot of stray cats in his neighborhood. That is until a lot of Chinese people moved in. Then the cats disappeared.
Before some of you start condemning the "cruel Chinese" just remember that millions of dogs and cats are GASSED every year in the good old USA while some people insist on paying thousands of dollars on a pure bred or designer dog. FOOLS.
It's a dog eat dog world or a man eat dog world??????
geez people stop ruining this feel good story :S
happy new year doggies

(The thing above is my failed dog picture)
what a bunch of hyenas the china man is,,, all you freaks that go to walmart and support them are freaks also...
Thank goodness !!!
So many terrible horrible things happening to innocent animals every day, hour, minute.....there will always be cruel heartless people, this will never end, I just wish these cruel #@#%%$# will die a terrible death as punishment !!!
Also, I see a lot of racist comments on this page.....that is sad because racism is as bad as animal cruelty, there're good people and bad people in every culture, I'm very sad and disappointed to see all these racist comments coming from animal lovers....
About this article, these dogs were saved by an animal lover in China, and he's a Chinese too !
Geezus..If the Chinese insist on eating dogs and cats, treat them with respect for their sustenance. Yes, many of us eat meat. Personally it makes me physically sick to look at that picture. It's no wonder the Chinese end up infecting the entire world with diseases when they eat dogs/cats with distemper and every other canine/feline disease. Healthy huh? Let's make sure we order the one with the eyes closed, encrusted, draining with pus for dinner tonight. Anyone who can look at that picture and think it is normal to treat animals like that, needs to see it for real and close up, and tell me it doesn't bother them even a bit to witness it firsthand. For those who will say it doesn't bother them, well, I am at a loss for words right now for how I would respond to that.
