BEIJING – In a corner of a cramped conference room that played host to the awarding of the First Confucius Peace Prize, two small children milled around in a corner playing a game with a small crystal trophy that ended up being the actual Confucius prize itself.
Had the two looked up, they probably would have far more enjoyed the game being played out around them.
In what will probably go down as one of the worst PR disasters for China in some time, the assembled jurors for the Confucius Peace Prize – some of whom had only been selected a few days before – awarded the prize to former Taiwanese vice-president Lien Chan, who through his spokesman claimed he had never heard of the prize and had no intention of ever picking up the award.
Lien perhaps feared the skewering that popular Taiwanese animated news company, Next Media, gave him just yesterday:
Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy
The jury, receiving the award in Lien’s absence noted, ““We are here to collect the prize on behalf of Grandpa Lien Chan!” to a smattering of applause from staffers inside.
The assembled media, already skeptical of a prize announced only 3 weeks before and conveniently awarded the day before the Nobel Peace Prize, had many of their suspicions confirmed by the official “Confucius Peace Prize Jury Announcement,” which seemed rushed and virulent in its opinion of the Nobel Prize and its Norwegian origins:
China is a symbol of peace, meanwhile it owns the absolute power to uphold peace. With over 1 billion people, it should have a greater voice on the issue of world peace. In essence, Norway is only a small country with scarce land area and population, but it must be in the minority in terms of other relatively large numbers concerning the conception of freedom and democracy. Hence, the selection of the “Nobel Peace Prize” should open [sic] to the people in the world instead of engaging in “minority” type of the [sic] so-called presumption. Because it is unable to stand on the highest point of the whole human being, but also difficult to represent the viewpoint of most people, which could be inevitably biased and fallacious.
As the jurors stressed, China had reconstructed the “Peace Prize” with Chinese characteristics. However, according to them, none of this had anything to do with jailed dissident, Liu Xiaobo.
In fact, the jurors initially were reluctant to even say Liu’s name aloud, preferring euphemisms that referred to the Chinese characters that composed his name.
In responding to one question regarding Liu, a juror cautiously said, “Everything and every detail we do at the Confucius Peace Prize, has nothing to do with the Three Characters [Liu Xiaobo] you just mentioned.”
The amusing names brought levity to some otherwise serious questions posed to the jurors regarding the detention of Liu Xiaobo, the timeline surrounding the creation of the Confucius Prize, the origins of the 100,000 yuan ($15,000) prize and the co-opting of an important Chinese philosopher in the name of political gamesmanship with the West.
As the press conference went on, hard feelings amongst the jurors regarding the criteria for the Nobel Peace Prize and its past winners started to seep out.
In particular, jurors were keen to discuss China’s peaceful history and rise as compared to the West. Even providing a history lesson as one noted that acclaimed 16th century Chinese admiral and eunuch, Zheng He, “sailed much of the world and never colonized anyone.”
President Barack Obama’s win last year was also mentioned as an example of the hypocrisy of the prize as jurors expressed outrage that someone who presided over two wars in Iraq and Afghanistan could be nominated to win a peace prize.
Whether there is another Confucius Peace Prize next year will certainly be a topic of intense discussion in the coming months. To be sure, a ceremony next year will almost certainly be cleaned up and this rare, it's unlikely this uncensored commentary on Sino-western relations will ever be repeated again.
However, that isn’t to say that the sentiments expressed today won’t be felt down the line. As one juror confidently noted toward the end, “In 500 years, history will be on our side!”

This prize won't be worth squat either. On the Nobel side, you have them giving their peace prize to guys, who might do something in the future...they hope (but not looking too good so far) vs. the Chinese prize, where they give it to people, who do what?, keep their mouths shut and don't go against the government?
Both are a joke.
China's definition of peace is aways in the context of peace and quiet. ;)
Buah Ha Ha Ha, children are playing with the prize? It seems too funny to be serious.
For China, peace means "You say sorry when China hits you."
China handing out a prize based on freedom and democracy makes the prize completely meaningless. And attaching Confucius' name onto the prize stains the great name. This is one of the grandest scale April Fools joke ever.
Their idea of peace is to eliminate the competition.
Confucius say "Receiving new Peace Prize is like Chinese takeout- 2 hours later you're empty again"
WOW five out of the eight comments on here at this time have been deleted. I better be careful what I say about China or my comment about what a transparent and blatently stupid act that award ceremony was will get deleted too.
Doesn't matter dude, YOU'LL know you said it and you'll know it's the truth and that's all that really matters!
Overgrown, they were all advertising, not deleted for their opinions.
Wow...what a prestigious award...lol...$15,000 and ALL THE PRIDE YOU CAN SWALLOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wonder if they have a Tibetan Monk Award...first prize is dinner and an overnight stay (for the rest of your life) at a wonderful Chinese detention camp...ill treatment at no extra charge...please bring a change of underwear...organ removal at NO EXTRA CHARGE OR FEE!!!! lol...peace.
I would actually like to win this prize (it's not very likely, but I'd like to). I'd take the entire $15,000 and donate it to some "Free Tibet" organization!
I would like to win it and buy MADE IN AMERICA stuff....if I can find any.
I often ask the question that why some of the Nobel Peace Prizes were awarded to people who are advocating the wars, political convicts and religious leaders who promote racial violence? Isn't this against the original founder Nobel's original purpose? Why let politics ruin such a noble cause??
Arcangel needs a taxpayer paid refresher history course.
Uh, can anybody think of a noble cause in history that politics hasn't ruined?
rro, thanks but no thanks, it is you that need a refresher course in American history.
Please google American Chinese history, Chinese American, Chinese exclusion act and angel island, you will find out what the Americans did to their Chinese American citizens. A land of the free, democracy and Eqaul rights for all? you are joking! A scincere apology from the president to their Chinese American citizens is long overdue.
No its not. Things that happened in the past by past presidents and/or congress isnt the fault of this president or me or my children. If mistakes were made, like they were to the Japanese, Germans, and American Indians in our history, then it needs to be noted as a mistake and left in the past. Obama doesnt owe the Chinese an apology just like the Chinese will never apologize to the Tibetans or the Kashmir(ians) that they have taken over in their "colonizations" that the one panelist stated the Chinese have never done.
Apologize my asparagus!
This whole peace prize is a joke. It is China once again thinking that since they have the largest country with the greatest land mass, that they can dictate to everyone around them how things will be. Until they completely open their country up to personal freedoms they cant say or do crap in the name of peace.
Applying your logic, then Germany should retract their apology to the Jews.
What pipe are you smoking? Where did you get this idea? is this in your head or they said it? They only said that they don not want wars and they want peace and harmony and creep like you of course don't believe in it.
Here we are getting into a philosophical discussion what is a "freedom". In the states, we have our definition of freedom, such as free speech, moving, picketing, election of crap candidates, etc, etc, In their society, if they have food, they can avoid hunger and be protected and they think that is a freedom for them. Obviously they have made tremendous progress since Tienanmen square incident. Can you imaging that Confucius, who was considered to be the biggest historical criminal and now they are using his name for a peace prize? We can not impose our type of political system to them, just like we can not graft our democratic system to Iraq, it won't work.
It is stupid in anyone's brain and thinking that other country's culture, science and social political system won't progress but only ours. A case to prove my point, we are now buying wind farming and bullet train technology from China. This is unthinkable even 5 years ago. You can cook your pot in your small cocoon, but please don't spur your ignorance here and make a fool yourself.
The irony of the authoritarian Legalist government in China co-opting the benevolent mantra of Confucianism to tweak the noses of the West is significant. If China truly embraced Confucian ideals, Chinese history would not be littered with dynasty after dynasty built on the reviled wreckage of their predecessors. Far from a peaceful rise, China has the bloodiest history of any civilization on earth when examined as a factor of the length of Chinese recorded history... No major change in government in China has ever been without violence and bloodshed...
You have a point here; however, the entire world history is nothing but bloody sagas, western and eastern cultures all alike. At least holding that "benevolent mantra of Confucianism" is better than nothing.
Of course if we let politics get involved, the Nobel prize and the Confucius prize both have their ulterior sinister motivations. then it is an unfortunate hypocrisy in both cases.
Confucius preaches imperialism, not peace. Confucius advocated that everyone should obey the ruler, totally, completely, unconditionally. He equate hiding your father's and your son's crimes with justice. He told the women to comply with the "norm", and not make waves. He ordered women to "Obey your father when young, obey your husband when you grow up, and obey your son when you got old." Confucius lived in an age of many states in China fighting with each other. An age of military conflicts. Mohists at the time were the one promoting peace, and fight only in defense. And Confucius of one of the strongest opponents to those ideas.
I can see why they pick Confucius as the name of this Confusion Pieces Prize: they want war, not peace.
By the way, Chan in Lien Chan is "war" in Chinese. Another indication of their intentions.
This makes you the biggest laugh amongst the Confucius scholars and you just flunked below F.
Confucious and Nobel Prizes are a joke and for commercial purposes only. The Nobel prize lost most of its credibility and worthiness when it awarded Obama a peace prize, based on his words, not his deeds.
Obama should have won this for being the biggest borrower from China and building Chinese relations. That and he has the biggest tin cup out there, if you turn it over its says Made in China.
If you need a prize to get a personal satisfaction of your work, then you're doing things for all the wrong reasons.
Nobel lost me way before that. Awarding it the idiots, terrorists, fearmongers and do-nothings.
"If you need a prize to get a personal satisfaction of your work, then you're doing things for all the wrong reasons."
How true.
This is some sort of joke, yes? PRC a symbol of peace? That's funny!
You know they can say the samethng as you did.
pax romana, chinese-style.
Hey, give China a break. They're far more peaceful than the 'religion of peace', right? There's a billion people in that one too. Hey, that's 2.3 billion people claiming to be dedicated to peace. Of course, both of them have a common first commandment: Resistance is Futile!
I'll sleep better tonight! (rotflol)
arcangel707
You know they can say the samethng as you did.
Are you serious? This country has its faults and one of them is having this great expectation that everyone should live as free as us. We think that we can push our ideas on others even if geographically they will never work. So we are a bad place because we want others to be happy? I would rather be bad for trying to apply good to the world than being good for applying bad to the world. (Tiawan, Tibet, Kashmir, not doing anything about N Korea,etc...) You're are an idiot (in my opinion of course). Suck it arcangel707!
I did not resort to name calling, but if you want to do that I can oblige that.
We have been brainwashed by the media. Just see how many wars that we did in the past decade under the name of freedom. For as free as us? you got to be kidding. How many countries were worse off than we "liberated" them before?
You are an helpless and hopeless individual. Our country is being controlled by the industrial complex that is making the finest killing machines and nothing else. We are constantly seeking new wars ant not the happiness of others.
Obama got the Nobel for serving alcohol to a couple people. Makes you wonder the value of any of these awards. What IS apparent now is that the awards are shovels full of political crud. Why shouldn't the Chinese get in on the act as well? What is important anymore is the APPEARANCE of something inportant; spin and burning the right books will take care of the rest...
Funny how they should express such pride over their ancestor who explored much of the world but conquered no one: I believe the Chinese government at the time squelched his curiosity, ordered him to stay in China and burned his ships so that the country would not be contaminated with foreign influence.
Some of the most democratic thoughts and philosophies were generated during Confucius time. However, no couturiers or cultures have ever been adopted to that noble thought, i.e., elect the most the able and pass the power not to their own sons (interests).
I found it is interesting that for every generation of China's dynasties, no matter how brutal it was, it always embraced Confucius at the end. This is because Confucism advocates peace, harmony and good for all.
if China really means it, then it is certainly a blessing for all, but the ten million dollar question, based on blogger's comments in this thread alone, how may of you really believe in that?
Morever, don't we need a war to jump start our economy? if not, why we constantly make joint military exercises with S Korea in a troubled water for 9 times in the past 6 months? You figure that out.
Arcangel, are you on Chinese government payroll, aren't you? You got everything backward, fellow. Confucios is sold out psedo-philosopher and his dumb ideology didn't do any good for anyone. Stop smoking marihuana.
leak, every time you racists are bashing China, I will do whatever to stop you.
Your ignorance really amazes me. Fella, keep smoking your weed and live in a dream world.
This proves your ignorance is beyond remedy. it is equivalent to say an oriental Socrates is an idiot....
Obiviouls you did not read some of his work, so how can I blame a person from hicksville??
"Conquered no one" ? You haven't read any Chinese history. It shows.
Yeah least we forget the 1989 Chinese protest in Tiananmen Square. Yeah that's Chinese Democarcy hard at work.
why don't you remember that we have slaughtered all the American Indians instead? OMG, self justification is certainly human trait and deficiency, I guess.
BTW, don't bother to answer, I know your answer.... it was a past old history right?
We did do terrible things to the Indians and giving them land and federal tax payer money and spending ours at their awesome casinos is payback enough. You cant compare things that happened 140 years ago to things that China is still doing today. Idiot.
in the scheme of things 140 years ago and 10 years ago have no difference in a stream of time. Stop calling names or I will report you to the mod and have you removed from this civilized discussion!
I remember the Communists killed 70 million Chinese. No one can top that. Not even the US, cause there were 70 million Indians.
arcangel707:
Unfortunately most of the Native North and South Americans had already died of disease before the United States became a country. French, Dutch, English, Spanish and Portuguese nationals passed on European diseases accidentally, and occasionally on purpose, during the first 300 some years of their occupation of the New World, killing millions. Wars and direct violence by these countries resulted in far fewer deaths, although Spain and Portugal killed many through their practice of enslaving Native Americans. (300 years is 64 years longer than the US has been a country)
The Chinese did a similar thing in the middle ages when the Black Plague was passed from China to Europe through the Silk Road, killing at least 1/3 of the European population; 25 million people in the first 5 years! China has never apologized for allowing this disease to leave China so that they could earn Western gold and reduce the European population.
The US often treated Native Americans badly, continuing the European practices, but there were Americans who did not believe in these practices and fought against them. Just as slavery of Africans was an institution of the American South, and generally condemned and forbidden in the American North. It's a mistake to present American actions or attitudes about these subjects in too broad a stroke. China also commits its share of errors; the so called Confucius Peace Prize is one of them.
"China is a symbol of peace"
That seems highly unlikely, considering China has 1,000 missiles pointed toward Taiwan, a country that offers no threat whatsoever to China, and then there's that little issue of supporting the dictator in North Korea.
sichuan
Obviously even though you had been married to a Chinese lady, you still are far from understanding their culture.
Secondly, you obviously did not follow the recent news either, probably they were blocked in China? According the Wikileaks, the Chinese leaders are fed up with the dictator in NK, but they have been hijacked into a pirate ship, because if NK collapses. then hordes of NK refugees will go into the heart of Manchuria and caused immersible problems, more so than previous Yugoslavia.
arcangel707, I'm still married to her. I do in fact understand their culture to some degree. I understand that China's civilization is thousands of years old and that China has been attacked by outside forces many, many times, the latest ones being the attacks by Japan. I realize that Chinese citizens were mistreated and slaughtered many times. I also realize that during the twentieth century the Chinese people were called "slant eyes", "yellow bastards", "chinks" and other derogatory names, none of them deserved. I know that they were considered uncultured and backward. I also know that the majority of Chinese citizens today are proud to be Chinese and they want to take their place on the world stage. I have great respect for the majority of Chinese citizens and I have a large number of Chinese friends both in China and here in the U.S. I publicly defend the Chinese people against unjustified and hateful accusations.
The Chinese government has the ability to moderate the actions of the Little Hitler next door. I think that any influx of North Koreans into China would be temporary and short lived. If war breaks out between the two Koreas China could very quickly and very easily work with Western Powers to see that the entire Korean peninsula is united under a single government, that government being a multi-party government elected by the people. Of course, China does not want a civilian elected multi-party government for the entire Korean peninsula. That's the problem. South Korea, along with Western nations, would be more than willing to bring the North Korean people into the twenty-first century and provide them with things they have been denied for so very, very long, provided they relinquish the one party dictatorship that currently exists in North Korea.
As things stand, the world will simply have to wait for North Korea to implode from within, the ordinary North Korean citizens taking action on their own. It's time for Western nations to stop providing aid to North Korea. The aid seldom finds its way to those who truly need it.
Once again, if the Chinese government is truly interested in peace it's time to remove the 1,000 missiles aimed toward Taiwan and it's time to put the North Korean bully in his place. The only thing stopping the Chinese government from doing this is their political ideology. As always, political ideology trumps the needs of innocent civilians, which can be said for all countries, not just China.
I think that the most deplorable thing that ever did was the Chinese Exclusion Act. Simply because at that time there was a depression and the politicians found Chinese Americans were an easy target and scape goat.
If you are in China, then let me tell you your statement above is not entirely correct. China would welcome a unified government under S Korea was what I read from Wikileaks, China in fact had very little control over that little "Hitler" as you alleged. On the contrary, this little guys had caused lot of senior leaders in China to take Zantac. Of course I don't know how true Wikileaks really is, and I am also taking this at face value. I found it amusing that our commander Mullen blamed the China "did not regin their ally into its proper behavior". Or he knows this and just want to spike the Chinese.
Again your news is also a little old. I think Taiwan's president Ma is smart enough to maneuver the eventual withdraw of all these terrible threats, provided if he will be re-elected 2012. If DPP is elected, then this situation will remain.
Nice to hear from you. Wish you and your Chinese wife a lot of Happy years together. I found your comments are polarized. On one hand you are defending China and on the other you bash it like crazy. Your knowledge about China is also sometimes not correct and perhaps it is becasue you have limited access of news?
So Arcangel707 believes in lies of one single Chinese diplomat and not what China did. I know, you are Chinese, and people should not confuse Chinese with facts. Only words from the Party counts.
poiuy, I don't think arcangel is Chinese, although I think he has lived in China for several years. Actually, I think he is quite educated as to Chinese culture and I respect him for his knowledge of the country and its citizens.
yep , China, is big economicly, maybe militarily, but not to swift on common sense yet
A history professor once asked his class "who was the worst mass murderer in history?" Hitler? He was number three (about 20 million). Stalin? He was number two (about 30 million). And the winner is ... Chairman Mao with a total head count of over 40 million! So much for China's version of a peaceful nation.
Actually during the Japanese invasion more than 40 millions Chinese were perished.
It wasn't 40 million during the Mao days. It was 70 million. 40 million only during the Great Leap Forward campaign. Another 30 million during other power and class struggles, and the Cultural Revolution. Japanese killed may be about 2 million Chinese. The CCP vs KMT civil war killed way more than Japan ever did, all around the world.
poiuy, I think you just changed your blog name. you are the same jodeman if I am not mistaken. I don't know where you get that figure and frankly speaking, no one really knows what is the true casualties and collateral damages of a war that can cause. The CCP and KMT had an civil war. Try to read some authentic history books please and don't make a joke that is circulated all around the world.
Is the Nobel Peace Prize even worth anything??? They seem to just throw it out to anyone these days....Our "Leader" wasn't even a leader when he was nominated....still hasn't shown leadership and yet it sits proudly on his mantel....
It seems odd that China did something so half-assed.
Usually they do things whole-assed.
Sounds like their basis for this is "we have the most people, we should make the decisions for the world."
Having read a book of the sayings of Confucious, they were almost all about honoring your elders, obeying your government, and knowing your place. In short, obedience. Sound exactly like the basis for a Chinese "Peace Prize".
As for a peaceful rise, the wars of unification giving rise to the Emperors are legendary; the empire was maintained by executing everyone who stepped out of line (and their great admiral was a eunich; not a great selling point IMHO). The communist revolution and the later "cultural revolutions" were hardly peaceful (someone else here quoted 40 million dead attributed to Mao).
Every country and culture has its darkest moment, the past mistakes do not infer future's behavior. If you have visited China, then you will noticed very little difference between east and west with the exception of food, people and language. Cultural revolution in China was a huge Holocaust for humanity, I think the Chinese leaders realize that. They are trying very hard to give an impression of peaceful rise, but unfortunately, western society and people have been cultivated in a anti-Chinese and China mentality ever since the 18th century. The transcontinental railway contribution by the Chinese Americans were never recognized, instead thousands of them were massacred during that time, even more, the congress had passed the only racially biased Chinese Exclusion Act in the late 1800's. This law was not repelled until after the WWII. Three or four generations of American Chinese were subjugated to immense racial non-equality in this "land of the free". Such an irony is still being reflected in this blog. Mr. Obama should represent the entire US and apologize to its Chinese American citizens for past wrong doings. Perhaps then a true free democracy of this country can be achieved.
Yep. Every culture has its dark moments. China's darkest moment is now. There is no ethics, no moral. China is so poor that all it's got is money.
poiuy, I want to ask you some questions because I don't really know who you are, where you live and where you've been. Have you been to China? Have you interacted with the Chinese people? Have the Chinese people offended you in any way or caused you harm? I'm asking you honest questions because I want to understand you. I don't have an agenda of any kind.
I've been to China many times. The majority of Chinese citizens are hard working, honest, moral, ethical, intelligent, courteous and kind. Friends take care of friends and family members take care of each other. I will admit that China has less than honorable people, slums, poverty and crime just like all the other countries on this earth but that is neither here nor there.
I respectfully submit that you need to understand that certain actions of the Chinese government are neither emulated nor endorsed by the general population. I think you should also realize that Chinese culture is thousands of years old and until their political system was drastically changed in certain ways just a short time ago the Chinese people didn't really have the ability or financial means to change.
Chinese citizens have only recently been able to advance in certain areas of their lives. They are a proud people and they are tired of being blamed, degraded and hated for things they did not cause and have absolutely no control over. They desire nothing more than you or anyone else and they are certainly entitled to it.
sichuan, until a person wants to open his or her eyes and go to China for a tour, their only source of information is from the news and media. It is rather unfortunate that Chinese Americans had built the infrastructure of the transcontinental railway and only exchanged it for the infamous "Chinese Exclusion Act". The rampant anti-Chinese and anti-China attitude is lingering until this very day.
You can't blame poiuy, jodeman and the folks here because that is the only source of information that they have. The last Korean conflict had left scars on both sides. Recently this old wound was opened and NK is pouring salt into it and I sincerely wish the situation may calm down soon.
Even when China has developed the green technology, fast trains and made tremendous progress in space exploration and in some areas left America in the dust, these supra racist people still believe that China is in dark ages. When I toured China last year, I was astonished by their progress in basic infrastructures, hotels, highways and transportation systems, granted these places that I visited are tourist areas; nevertheless, if they can do it there, it is only a matter of time for them to reach that to their country side.
China has an old civilization, the only continuous one, even though it had been conquered twice by Mongols and Manchu, yet these outside people had to adapt to the Chinese civilization and their own disappeared instead.
Confucius over three thousand years ago had already developed a harmonious society with ultimate democratic election system. Unfortunately dynasties after dynasties only used Confucius as a tool to control their people; such was described by some of the blogegrs here.
I admire your cause to stand up for Chinese people and its culture, I watched you praise its tradition its and humane side and yet you are not afraid to repudiate their political system and you wish it to be freer and hopefully one day it really means “of the people, for the people and by the people”. By the way this concept was not from Lincoln’s first. It was from Confucius.
I've been to China. Arcangel and Sichuan. I think your ties to China mean you have a lot of information to offer, but also seems to have affected your objectivity slightly. You are bending a little too far to paint a nice picture of China. What I've found in my visits does not match up with your descriptions. You may say I need to delve deeper into the people and their culture to understand. I would argue that you have delved to a depth where you've lost a little objectivity. I'm willing to be proven wrong of course, but what I see you write here has too much positive spin based on my experiences.
HA!!!!!!!!!!! Very Good!
F%CK CH!NA! and the rest of the far east!
So how much are the Chinese paying you to be their shill here arcangel?
Blatant lies about numbers don't change the facts, Mao killed far more than the Japanese did, over twice as many as a matter of fact. Another troublesome little reality that the current dictatorial regime in China would want swept under the rug, like that whole Tiananmen Square thing or killing Tibetans and stealing their country.
Don't forget that most of the east STILL CULLS FEMALE INFANTS! Sick FU$K!NG PEOPLE!
Oh. I got paid for a Beemer every time I bash you racists here. I am a proud American. How many Anerican Chinese and American Indians your grappa have slughted?
http://www.gendercide.org/case_infanticide.html
I was in bejing last year. nasty people unless you are being catered as a tourist. The rest only care about themselves, including fellow Chinese
Like here in the states, if you are nasty to others and others will be nasty to you. It is a fair game. Please tell me who are not for themselves? You think being a Chinese, they should be yielding to Americans as second class citizens?
you must have not read the article about how chinese companies 'rent' white westerners to pretend to be part of the executive team so they can appear to be diversified and superior in employing a white foreigner. its obvious their mentality is that a white foreign leader figure is superior to even a better looking chinese leader figure.
I read that and found it amusing because I don't know how many white westerners are willing to participate in this kind of scheme. The other thing is that most Chinese companies are really diversified to hire a lot of westerners, some of them from top schools in the US. So maybe the executive it is a white westerner.
